The Frozen Calf...

Here she is...

our little frozen calf

We named her Elsa...

After the Disney Princess from the movie Frozen

Yes, she is all thawed out and...

SUPER CUTE !

Golden Girl is so glad to have Elsa at her side...

Elsa is so happy to be back with her mama...

2 weeks ago Golden Girl gave birth to Elsa.

It was a long, difficult delivery

and 19 degrees that night.

When we found Elsa the next morning,

she was frozen to the ground and not moving.

We rushed home with the frozen, newborn calf,

rubbed her down and dried her off

with a hair dryer

and tubed her with colostrum.

We could not get a reading on the thermometer.

5 hours later she could open her eyes,

it gave us hope.

By the next morning,

we heard mooing from the basement !

Elsa is now back out in the pasture

with her mama, Golden Girl.

Elsa is a very friendly calf.  When she sees us out

in the field, she comes up and sucks our fingers.

I think she knows us, knows our smell...

and maybe she knows we helped her out

when she needed it most.

When you raise livestock, you are just a heart beat

away from death and sorrow...

you must take the bitter with the sweet.

This time it ended sweet.

Elsa...The Frozen Calf

Remember Elsa the Frozen Calf ?

This is Elsa a year ago with her mama...

She froze the night she was born and we

thawed her out with a hairdryer...

Fast forward to today....a year later:

This is Elsa now weighing in at 1,000 lbs.

She is the biggest and best heifer in the herd.

I thought you might appreciate an update on Elsa.

Golden Delicious

Yes, they are twins !

2023...Golden Girl with her calf, Elsa

We now have a herd of Golden Girls !

2024...Here are Golden Girl's calves

all grown up:

Golden Delicious and Elsa

They look just like their mama.

Golden Delicious and Elsa

They live in the same pasture right now...

As you can see...

Golden Delicious is expecting her first baby.

She is round like a barrel !

I check on these girls 2 or 3 times a day,

but no baby yet.

Yes, Golden Girl had another baby this year:

Yes, it is a heifer...yay!

This is Brookie...our 4th Golden Girl.

Maybe some day all of the Golden Girls

will be in the same pasture together and I can

capture a family photo of all of them.

p.s.  Yes, Golden Girl has had other

golden calves but they were bull calves

and we don't keep them.

Working Cattle.....Spring 2024

It is Spring here in Western Oregon...

time to get the cattle worked

Today we are working the heifers...

heifers are the females who have just had

their very first calf.

The cow and calf pairs are herded into the corral

then sorted into different pens.

Mamas in one pen, calves in the other.

They don't like to be separated,

so they start bawling and it gets loud !

We have a tiny chute just for the calves...

it keeps them secure and safe so we can

get them worked quickly and back with their

mamas in just a few minutes.

This is our work table, the tailgate of the pick up.

I keep it organized so we can work efficiently

and get the cattle back out into

the pasture quickly.

Fly Tags...

These are ear tags that help keep the

flies off the cattle.

Cattle Vaccines...

These medications help prevent lots of

different cattle diseases as well pneumonia.

The calves are all done so it is time

to run the heifers through the chute...

We try and choose a cool, overcast day

to work the cattle...

This is Eleanor...2 year old heifer

I was there the day she was born.

Now she has her own baby and she is

such a great mama.

The Cowboy is putting fly tags on Elsa...

Yes, Elsa is the Frozen Calf.

She is now a year old and a very big girl !

Once the cattle have been worked,

we put them out to summer pasture

with the bulls to be bred.

We have been working cattle for several days now

and we have one more group of cows to work

then we can concentrate on getting

the hay equipment ready.

We will be making hay before we know it.
