Cleaning out the Calving Barns...
Our fleet of manure spreaders are
hooked up to the tractors and
ready to go to work...
We are cleaning out the two calving barns
we use in March, April and May...
The cowboy is on the Ford tractor
scooping out the barn and
loading up the spreaders...
We are working across the river from
our home place... off in the distance you
can see our red goat barn and my Thread Shed.
By the time I return with an empty spreader,
the Cowboy has the next spreader filled up
and ready for me to spread on the pastures...
We just keep tag teaming all day
until the barns are all clean and ready
for next calving season.

Paper Piecing...LOVE
I am still having a lot of FUN trying out
different FPP blocks...
Last week I made this LOVE block...
This is a beginner level FPP...
I am using fabric scraps leftover
from quilts I made last year...
I have never done ABCs...
It was great FUN to see the letters
come alive...
12 inch LOVE block...
I couldn't resist...

The daffodils are blooming
below our Century Farm sign...
This is Althea Pink...
still waiting for her to have her calf.
The Cowboy feeding a new bale
in the bull field...
There are 7 bachelors that belly up
to the hay bale each day...

Mod TV....TV Screens
This is my Wednesday project
when I meet up with my local quilt group:
Mod TV Quilt
I decided to add a fifth row of TV blocks...
I printed out images on fabric sheets
of some of the favorite shows
from my child hood...
The TV sets now have FUN images
on the screens...
I used fusible web and invisible applique'
to attach them to the TV blocks...
When I look at them I can hear
the TV show theme songs in my head...
Lots of FUN !
They really add to the whole
Mod TV vibe...
Saturday morning cartoons always
included the Jetsons...
Everybody wanted a talking horse
like Mr ED...
Oh, and to be magical like
I Dream of Jeannie...
I also included some test patterns
on a few of the TV sets...
This is as far as I got on Wednesday.
Next week I will add a few more TV shows
then begin moving the blocks around
so it looks more balanced.
Unfortunately, this just doesn't photograph
as well as it really appears in person.
Our days begin and end in the
calving grounds:
This is the view that greets us each morning
when we cross the river and head over
to feed and check on the cows and calves...
You can see our home place across the river
in the background where the red barn sits...
Each morning is like Christmas...
we look around to find a brand new calf
with its' mama.

Calving Season...
We are two weeks into calving season
here at the Kessi Ranch
The pastures are starting to fill up
with baby calves...
Once the calves are a week old,
they start to gang up together and
play tag....chasing one another
all over the pastures !
This calf had its nose up in the air
trying to smell me when I was
taking the picture...
This mama is the babysitter...
She watches over a group of calves
while their mothers go out and graze for awhile.
We will be calving for 8 more weeks
so there is lots more to come.
You can find cow and calf videos
on my Instagram.

Paper Piecing Continues...
Between trips across the river to
check on the cows and calves
I have been stitching...
I have had this pattern for a few years
and wanted to give it a try...
This is the color story...
Two templates....4 of each are required
to complete the star block...
First two templates are paper pieced...
Four Templates....half the block done
It is FUN watching this come alive...
All 8 templates are paper pieced...
The last seam is on the diagonal...
Poof...the block is together !
This is what the back side looks like...
I am trying out different quilt blocks
to use in future quilt designs.
It is calving season here on the Kessi Ranch:
So much cold RAIN it is miserable,
but the calves just keep on coming...
We have been supplementing lots of calves
with powdered colostrum to warm them up
and get them nursing...
More To Come...
