Rusted Fabric.........Weaving

Woven Rust & Batik Fabrics

I am experimenting with a little weaving.
If I like it, I might add it to my Rust Tex Challenge Quilt...

Rusted Fabric

Batik Fabric

Cutting 1/2 inch strips

Weaving Strips

Lay out all of the vertical rusted strips and pin them at the top and bottom.
Then begin weaving the brown batik strips being sure to pin down on each side.
I am thinking I may use this as a border treatment, so I need to keep it as square as possible.

A smaller iron works well to fuse down the weaving to the layer of fusible web underneath.

Music to Weave By...
This is some of the most relaxing music I listen to:
American Song Book by Rod Stewart
A New Standard by Steve Tyrell
You can listen HERE

Trimming down the woven strips.
I will leave the fusible paper backing on until I know exactly what I will do with this piece.

Woven strips
The colors work with the rusted photo transfer image...
I won't know if this is working until I get more up on the design wall.
I have some more weaving to do...

Somebody is tired of weaving and ready to leave the Thread Shed and call it a night

Fabric Paper.....Painted

Lots of metallic textile gold paint applied to the upper portion of this piece.
I am thinking this needs some sunflowers and big leaves on it...

Pinky Orange with gold metallic applied over leaves as a resist.
Much better in person, just couldn't get a good images of this one.

Very Juicy Orange
Makes You Happy

Blue Green with Yellow spattered over top

Lavender with metallic gold washed over the top

Painted as a landscape with metallic paints

Heavier layer of paint to test the hand of the textile paints.
This Fabric Paper still remains fairly soft and pliable, more like fabric

Pinky Purple with green and gold washes over top

Again, a heavier coating of textile paint, not as watered down.
Experimenting to see just how soft this fabric paper will remain.
My goal is to keep it more like fabric for machine quilting later on.

Pink Glove Dance....

The video was made at Providence St Vincent Hosp, Portland, Oregon. When the video gets 1 million hits, Medline (maker of the Pink gloves) will be making a contribution to the hospital, as well as offering free mammograms for the community. Please check it out. It's an easy and great way to donate to a wonderful cause, and who hasn't been touched by breast cancer?

Pies Cooling in the Window...

Today found me baking pies for the big turkey dinner tomorrow.
Baking is almost as much fun as playing with textiles~

Fabric Paper......Horses

The last couple of weeks has found me creating this wonderful New "Fabric Paper"
Oh the textures you can create with the combination of muslin and tissue paper.

My latest Fabric Paper creation is below:

Painted Fabric Paper
I was going for a landscape theme here...

This is what the Fabric Paper looked like BEFORE I painted it.
I used textile paints to keep the finished project soft so I can quilt it.

See my previous posts HERE for a tutorial

Wallpaper Horses
These were the inspiration for this landscape quilt.
As soon as I saw them at the thrift store I knew I could use them for something quilting related.

Lots of wall paper horses came in the package.
I wet the adhesive on the back of the horses and placed them directly on top of the painted Fabric Paper.

The wallpaper horses acted as a resist when I stamped the black paint over the top of them.

Here they are with the wallpaper horses removed.
The resist technique created a silhouette of the horses.
I had no idea how this would turn out.....everything is an experiment around here.

p.s. I removed the wallpaper horses as soon as I was done stamping the black paint on. They removed easily.

I was in the mood to continue stamping, so I took out my collection of ABC stamps and had some more fun!

Fabric Paper Horses
Ready to layer with batting and backing fabric.
I plan to throw some stitches into this and see how it looks...

Here is another Tutorial on creating FABRIC PAPER

Happy Thanksgiving

He hand raised this bird and just loved him.

P.S. Mister Turkey lived a very long life here on the farm

Sunrise

I continued to click the camera for several minutes.
It was amazing just how quickly the sky changed as the sun came up in the sky

Looking East toward Mary's Peak

Stormy Autumn Sunrise

After 15 minutes of camera work, this is what the sky looked like.
It changed so dramatically and so quickly.
I am so glad I was there to see this happen!

Rust Fabrics on Design Wall...

I saw this in the GRIT magazine this morning.
It helps put everything into perspective for me.

Design Wall

I spent the summer creating Rust Dyed Fabrics.

A week before Dancer left us I began to design this portrait quilt of him as an entry for the Rust-Tex Challenge.

It has been up on the design wall, which made it difficult for me to go into the Thread Shed.

Photo Transfer onto Rusted Muslin Fabric

I plan to weave strips of rust dyed fabrics as an inner border around this image transfer.

Depending on how the design work goes, I also have rust fabric made with Dancer's horse shoes, as well as rusty star images, some rusted rebar that may make a good framed border treatment, and some of Dancer's mane hair.

Monday I will spend the day sewing with my local quilt group, Harlan Valley Quilters.
Thursday I will spend the afternoon in class with my always fun Permission 2 Play group.

May I never miss a sunset or a rainbow because I am looking down,

Poem for Dancer...

Upon my horses back I ride; I need no other by my side
Over the rocky trail we trot, I trust my horse with all I've got
Though the hills are steep and the trail is long, he runs like the wind his body strong
I hear the sound of a running creek, while upon this horse I do not speak
As I take in his majestic beauty and grace, my kind companion keeps his pace
There has never been a happier me but the trail has ended, I start to cry
To my beautiful horse a sad goodbye.
Knowing you has filled my heart with joy
I shall never forget you, my Dancer boy

A special Thank You to my sister, Tinker, for writing this beautiful tribute to our companion, Dancer.

Warm hugs go out to all of you who follow this blog and who have left me such supportive comments when I need them most.

I have not made it out to the Thread Shed yet. I am hoping I can very soon.

Bye For Now,
LuAnn
