Woven Quilt........Class Sample 2

Inspiration

I keep a pile of trimmings on my cutting table.
This is what I am using to inspire my next woven quilt.
Let's see what happens...

I separated my black and white stash into just that.......Blacks & Whites

Here are the black strips pinned down to the insulation board
The strips are cut randomly between 3/4 to 1 1/4 inches.

Underneath the strips is a 9 x 12 inch piece of fusible interfacing.
The black strips are laying against the fusible side.

The white strips have been woven horizontally through the black strips

Keep the piece on the weaving board....
Press the strips onto the fusible interfacing.
This will keep the strips from shifting.

Remove the strips from the weaving board.
Flip the piece over and iron directly on the fusible interfacing.
This will help keep everything secure.

Laying face down, trim off the excess strips.
Your piece will measure 9 x 12 inches.

Weaving is complete...
You are ready to add borders.

I just had to add the pink inner border as a zinger!

Thread Audition...

I chose shiny rayon, polyester and glitter threads

Bobbin Thread...

I am using a very fine weight Bottom Line thread in the bobbin
Remember.......tighten the bobbin screw to accommodate the thinner thread.
Right Tighty - Lefty Loosey

Machine Quilting...

Random wavy lines of quilting using ALL of the threads above.
This was very fun and freeing.

Woven Quilt........Class Sample

Today I am making a Woven Quilt for a class sample.
I chose some solid looking batiks and some fibers in different weights.
Let's see what happens...

This was Fun!
I tore all of the strips, no rotary cutting.

I used the same weaving technique I developed for my Cow Pony Quilt.

Canvas Stretcher Board

I decided to mount this woven quilt on a stretcher board.
This will help support the weight of the piece.

Canvas covered in black batik fabric

Installing a picture hook on the back of the canvas

This is my Thread Shed Toolbox........it holds very different tools than my regular tool box in the house!

I stitched the quilt through the canvas to hold it in place.
This also gives me the option of removing the quilt from the canvas if I need to.

Quilt Label fused to the back of the canvas

" Weaving My Dreams "

Beads sewn on by hand

Beads strung on to the fibers hanging at the bottom.

This project was free spirited for me........I am a recovering Perfectionist........and ripping fabric with stray threads dangling here and there is not my norm.........but I enjoyed every minute of it.........thus the name.........Weaving My Dreams.

Cow Pony Rust Quilt.....Done

This is how things looked at 10:00 last night...

Cow Pony Quilt

All of the applique and machine quilting is done.
About 5 hours to get the leaves on and complete the quilting.

Today I will hand sew the binding.
Then we will go outdoors for a photo session.
(I hope my camera cooperates)

I kept the leaves close by.....they were a great inspiration when it came time to quilt the veins in the fabric leaves. Isn't mother nature wonderful!

Tomorrow I will spend the day doing a clean sweep in the Thread Shed.
Many fabrics were auditioned and are now in need of sorting before they are put back into the cupboards.

After a project it helps me to clear my head by cleaning up and organizing the Thread Shed. Once everything is put away and order is restored, I love to stand back and appreciate this lovely environment I am so fortunate to have and work in.

I do have to tell you though....it doesn't last long!

I can't wait to get back in there and start on something new...

Rusted Fabric.........Weaving

Woven Rust & Batik Fabrics

I am experimenting with a little weaving.
If I like it, I might add it to my Rust Tex Challenge Quilt...

Rusted Fabric

Batik Fabric

Cutting 1/2 inch strips

Weaving Strips

Lay out all of the vertical rusted strips and pin them at the top and bottom.
Then begin weaving the brown batik strips being sure to pin down on each side.
I am thinking I may use this as a border treatment, so I need to keep it as square as possible.

A smaller iron works well to fuse down the weaving to the layer of fusible web underneath.

Music to Weave By...
This is some of the most relaxing music I listen to:
American Song Book by Rod Stewart
A New Standard by Steve Tyrell
You can listen HERE

Trimming down the woven strips.
I will leave the fusible paper backing on until I know exactly what I will do with this piece.

Woven strips
The colors work with the rusted photo transfer image...
I won't know if this is working until I get more up on the design wall.
I have some more weaving to do...

Somebody is tired of weaving and ready to leave the Thread Shed and call it a night

Woven Sunshine Quilt............DONE

I had a day to myself today.............and it was a fun day!
Thread Shed, Music & Machine Quilting
My needs are few...

With the exception of the stem in the middle of the vines, this was all free motion quilting without any marking. If you click on the image and enlarge it.....you can see the faint white chalk line down the center of the vine. That line keeps me going in the right direction as I move across the quilt stitching 90 mph.

I LOVE these Chubby Crayons for marking. They are made by Miracle Chalk. I purchased mine at my local quiltshop: JanniLou Creations in Philomath, OR.
They are soft and yummy and glide over the fabric effortlessly.

The BEST part of Chubby Crayons is...........you just iron the chalk off when you are done! As soon as the heat from the iron touches the chalk......it disappears completely!

You can quit reading this post now if you like.......because that was the best part of it!

Here is a peek at some of the whimsical vine quilting on the woven background area.

I learned the whimsical vine motif from Patsy Thompson. I purchased her DVD's a couple of years ago........and my machine quilting has improved more than I had ever hoped.

I chose a botanical quilting motif for the background and it was a good fit. I am happy with the way it turned out.

After all the machine quilting was done.......I blocked the quilt.........and was ready to trim it up square. This 20 inch Ominigrip Square Up Ruler is the absolute best and most accurate for squaring up those corners. I am sorry I waited 15 years to get one.

This 2o inch ruler makes it easy to have perfectly square corners on your completed quilts.

Here is the Woven Sunshine Quilt all DONE and ready for a binding. I am looking at all this leftover green batik fabric..........hmmm.........I also have a lot of leftover black fabric........that might work for a binding? After 9 hours of quilting today I am done making decisions.......the binding fabric will have to wait for another day.

Good Night,
LuAnn
