Neocolor II Portrait.......Zinnia

After a day in town...

I just wanted to settle down in my favorite chair

and color with my Neocolor II Crayons.

Suzy plans to keep me company...

Gunnr made himself cozy by the fire.

I am looking forward to a relaxing evening

of crayons on cloth.

I took this photo of a bright orange zinnia in one of our

flower beds last summer...

It is now printed on fabric...

The center of the flower is colored in with

yellow and red Neocolor II Crayons.

A few of the flower petals have been colored in...

All of the flower has been colored in...

This is when the MAGIC happens...

When moisture is added to the Neocolor II Crayons

they become so very vibrant !

The center of the flower has been painted.

It is very bright red now.

A few of the petals have been painted.

Check out the difference...

The colors are so juicy !

The entire flower has been painted at this point.

Still need to add background color...

Neocolor II Portrait.......Baby Chick

2 years ago we brought a dozen new chicks home

from the local feed store...

Brad was taking them out of the little carrier

and placing the chicks into a heated brooder box.

I managed to get a photo of one of the chicks in his hands.

Again, one of those images that I knew would become

a quilted textile someday...

After some photoshop work on the image,

it is printed out 13 x 19 inches on fabric

Neocolor II Crayon Audition

These are the colors I pulled for the chick

The chick is colored in...

Now I can start on the hands

These crayons are the closest I can get

for a good flesh tone

I colored in the wrinkles on his hands...

Then shaded in the darker areas,

using all 5 crayon colors.

Auditioning crayons for the shirt...

All of the coloring is done at this point...

I can begin painting...

The chick and hands are painted so far...

Here is the image all painted and ready for quilting:

Unfortunately this image doesn't do this piece justice.

The angle of the camera and the lighting is poor.

The image before this one is a better representation of this piece.

I will post an image after it has been quilted...

Neocolor Portrait......Long Ears

It is rainy outdoors today...

Good day to stay inside and play with

Neocolor II Crayons

I took this photo last year down at the goat barn.

This little kid goat had the longest ears.

When she finally pooped out from playing with the other kids goats,

she settled down for a nap and I was able to capture this image of her.

This is Long Ears printed out 13 x 19 inches on fabric

At this point Long Ears is all colored in with

Neocolor II Crayons

I used dark brown to highlight the wood grain lines.

Then I colored over the boards with a lighter brown.

It is time to paint over the Neocolor II

I use a tiny detail brush and also a flat wide brush

At this point only Long Ears has been painted...

Using the detail brush...

I paint over the darker wood grain lines only

Then I go in with the wider brush...

and paint over all of the barn boards

Ready to be basted and quilted...

I decided the wood boards behind Long Ears would be brown rather than the dried out gray color in the photo.

With this technique you can change the colors to suit the portrait.

I am on a roll.......I think I will start another portrait...

Neocolor Portrait.......Horse Herd

After herding yearling cattle this morning,

I decided to treat myself to an afternoon of creativity...

This week I spent time importing my photography into Photoshop Elements.

I removed the color from the photos and printed them onto fabric.

This is a photo of a horse herd I took last year...

These are wild horses waiting for adoption from the BLM

The horses are colored and painted...

Just need to add some blue sky and clouds...

This is now ready to be basted and quilted...

I am hoping to get into the Thread Shed next week and get a few portraits under the needle !

This photograph was taken by my sister.

As soon as she sent it to me, I just knew I had to quilt it...

I had some time before dinner tonight to get some color on it.

I need to invest in dark brown Neocolors...

I am not happy with the reddish hair color.

Screen Printing........ Frames

Today we built a few wooden frames for

Screen Printing

I am starting a new Surface Design Adventure:

These are the completed frames 10 x 14 inches

We watched a How-To-Video online...

Then got busy building frames.

The frames will need two coats of wood sealer to keep them from rotting.

They spend time under water when you clean them.

I plan to cover the frames with curtain sheers.

Kerr Grabowski's DVD suggested curtain sheers.

There are so many different ways to screen print.

I plan to try coating the screens with photo emulsion fluid and use my own photographic images.

I am also interested in trying

Kerr's Deconstructed Screen Printing technique.

This is my first attempt at Screen Printing.

I will try and take photos along the way so you can follow my progress.
