Woven Quilt........Class Sample

Today I am making a Woven Quilt for a class sample.
I chose some solid looking batiks and some fibers in different weights.
Let's see what happens...

This was Fun!
I tore all of the strips, no rotary cutting.

I used the same weaving technique I developed for my Cow Pony Quilt.

Canvas Stretcher Board

I decided to mount this woven quilt on a stretcher board.
This will help support the weight of the piece.

Canvas covered in black batik fabric

Installing a picture hook on the back of the canvas

This is my Thread Shed Toolbox........it holds very different tools than my regular tool box in the house!

I stitched the quilt through the canvas to hold it in place.
This also gives me the option of removing the quilt from the canvas if I need to.

Quilt Label fused to the back of the canvas

" Weaving My Dreams "

Beads sewn on by hand

Beads strung on to the fibers hanging at the bottom.

This project was free spirited for me........I am a recovering Perfectionist........and ripping fabric with stray threads dangling here and there is not my norm.........but I enjoyed every minute of it.........thus the name.........Weaving My Dreams.

Mixed Media Horse Quilt.......

Mixed Media Quilt.......Horse

The inspiration for this piece was an image of an old barn door (bottom right corner of quilt). I soon found an image of an old barn with cool doors (top left corner of quilt).

Then I found the image of a doorway with a horse standing in it....
After that, the quilt almost created itself!

This was a demo for a recent class........I think I will finish it.
I will post the completed quilt soon.

Freckles.......The Cow Mama

Since her companion passed away last fall, sweet Freckles has been so very lonely. We have considered finding her another horse to keep her company.

However, this Spring Freckles has taken on the responsibility of overseeing our herd of yearling cattle..........and they just love her!

Yearling Cattle

Just behind the yearlings is a little yellow building...
That is the Thread Shed, otherwise known as My Happy Place.

The yearling cattle see to it that Freckles is never alone.

When we look out into the pastures, Freckles The Cow Mama, is always on duty watching over the herd.

Garden Spot

We are preparing the backyard garden spot for planting.
We spread out plastic to smother the weeds.
We are planning to plant the corn and sunflowers here...

Spring has arrived in Western Oregon...

Spring has arrived in our little valley

On my way home, I had to stop and snap a photo of our place.
The lighting was just right at this time of day.

Lots of baby calves running through the fields.

That is always a sure sign that Spring has finally arrived...

While the mama cows are grazing, the babies gang up together and have relay races!

This little guy is trying to get his mother to play.....but she is having no part of it!

The Buzzards are Back!

That is also another sure sign that Spring has arrived...

The buzzards roost on the top of the fence posts and open their wings.
I think it is some sort of solar drying method they use.
There were 8 lined up with their wings open just before I got the camera out...

I am getting lots done out in the Thread Shed for future class samples...
I will post images as soon as I can.
Happy Spring!

The quilting is complete and this is in the mail on it's way back home.

I chose a fine gauge thread for machine quilting:

I did not want the stitching to obscure the names
