Hot Pads...Tutorial

I pawed through the fabric cupboard

and found lots of floral fabric scraps...

These have been around for 15 or 20 years...

It is time to put them to good use !

It cut them into 1.5 and 2 inch strips...

I am turning these strips into Hot Pads...

It was fast and FUN.....I will make more !

Here is a my Hot Pad Tutorial:

Insul-Bright Batting

Insul-Bright cut into 9 inch squares...

Place a 2.5 inch square of fabric

in the center...

Add a 1.5 inch strip,

using the stitch and flip technique...

stitching through the insul-brite

Add another 1.5 inch strip,

moving clockwise around the square...

You are stitching through the insul-bright batting,

then flipping the strip over and pressing it down...

Keep adding strips until the batting

is completely covered...

The top side of your hot pad is complete...

Flip it over and trim off any excess fabric

that sticks out beyond the 9 inch batting square...

Admire your creation...

To create the back side of the hot pad,

cut out a 10 square of backing fabric

and another 9 inch square of insul-bright...

Add a few rows of stitching to hold

the backing fabric and the batting together...

then trim down to 9 inches square

The top and back of the hot pad...

Place them pretty sides together,

stitch all the way around the hot pad,

leaving a few inches unstitched for turning

it right side out...

Trim the bulk off the corners,

Place your hand inside and pull

it right side out...

Push the corners out square,

iron the seam allowance to the inside,

and stop stitch all the way around...

Use a much larger stitch length

when top stitching, as the hot pad

is very thick at this point...

Hot Pad

Just outside the Thread Shed window

are our Boer Goats...

they keep me company while I am stitching.

This is a great way to use up those

fabric scraps while creating something

beautiful for your family and friends.

This will be waiting for me tomorrow

when I have a few more minutes to sew.

Horse Quilt....Borders

I have always been fond of Flying Geese...

Such a simple quilt block that creates

such a big impact in our designs...

Flying Geese units add lots of movement

to this horse quilt panel...

they get along well with the

rest of the quilt blocks...

I am still in the design phase,

nothing is stitched in place just yet...

The color story is working...

I am stitching holiday gifts right now.

I will stitch them and

look at this on the design wall.

It will let me know what else it needs.

As for these two little cowgirls...

they were bred and born here on our place.

I have known them since birth.

Buttercup and Eleanor

I love them so much !

Horse Quilt Panel...

All this year I have been working my way

through a stack of fabric panels...

This horse panel is on the design wall...

I bordered it with a rusty brown fabric...

This is the color story I pulled from the

fabric cupboard...

I created a test block to see how

the fabrics work together...

I made a few more...

I put a few blocks up on the design wall....

I will play around with placement

and see what works...

More To Come !

Feeding Cattle in Western Oregon

25 Degrees this morning in Western Oregon

I am driving the feed wagon

while the Cowboy feeds off the back...

We feed each morning in 4 different locations...

We are feeding across the river

from our home place.

You can see our red barn in the distance...

The square bales can weigh up to 1500 pounds.

They eat one every morning...

These are a few of our young heifers...

Eleanor is looking directly at you.

The Cowboy kicks off the last of the hay...

The cows will consume this hay in

a couple of hours then graze on pasture

the rest of the day.

We are done in this field

and ready to go load up another bale

and feed the next group of cows  up river.

When we are done feeding,

I head out to the Thread Shed

for a few hours of stitching !
