Hay Season....mowing and baling

We are finally clear of the wet weather and

getting a bit of a rhythm to our hay making...

I am mowing the third hay field today...

straight ahead is our place across the river.

The Big Elk River runs between our place

and this hay field...

The fir trees in our yard keep it shaded

and cool in the summer...

The Cowboy is up river about 3 miles

baling hay:

Here is a view of the first hay field

full of round bales...

The Cowboy is baling the second field:

It is always FUN to watch a bale

being kicked out of the round baler...

The Cowboy can make a round bale

about every 3 to 4 minutes...

he has made about 200 bales so far.

It was a beautiful day

and we were able to get lots done

in both hay fields.

While the hay was drying last week

we ran to the winery to pick up barrels:

They remind me of round hay bales...

We plan to use these later this summer

to do some landscaping at home.

  1. So interesting to see how the bales of hay are made; makes me want to hop on a plane and bake some hay!

  2. How long do you leave the bales in the field before getting them into the barn? Some farmers seem to forget they baled and leave the last baling in the field all winter - waste of hay!! We do the large square bales and I love to ride my horse in the hay field when the bales are there...makes for a fun obstacle course for us! It never seems to fail...get the hay cut and here comes the rain! I hope you get your two weeks of dry! Your short horn cattle look so content up there on the hill...Cowboy takes such good care of them!

    1. As soon as we are done making hay in all of the hay fields, we hook up the trailers and start hauling the bales out of the fields and into the barns for winter storage. I make sure I take lots of photos of the big bales before we haul them off.

      Happy Summer,
