Hot Pads...

 

My stock pile of hot pads is running low...

I like to keep them around for gift giving...

everybody needs a new hot pad !

A great way to use up those

fabric scraps...

Insulbrite batting as the base

and then stitch & flip the fabric strips in place...

Similar to log cabin blocks...

A pile of tops all done.

All finished with the backings,

then turned right side out

with top stitching all around the edges.

They pile up quickly !

The best part is....no binding necessary.

Give them away to everyone you meet up with !

4 weeks left in the calving season...

These first time heifers are being stubborned...

no baby calves yet !

They are beautiful 2 year old heifers...

This is Eloise (left) and Elsa (right)...

They are yearling replacement heifers.

They will be bred this summer and have

their first babies next Spring.

I just love spending time in the heifer field.

Tulip Bench Pillow...

It's is Spring... 

Time to piece some tulips...

The mini charm squares are all sorted by color

to create and piece the 8 tulips...

The bias squares or HSTs are all pieced

and the tulip squares are ready to put together...

The tulip and leaf units are all stitched

together for the pillow top...

I will get this basted with some batting

and do a bit of machine quilting...

We are nearing the end of calving season...

only 4 weeks left

This is the Cow Camp Tree...

It is an old growth fir tree that grows

in one of the cow pastures...

It provides a great deal of shelter for the

cows and calves...

It keeps them cool on hot days

and dry when it rains.

All the cattle enjoy camping out under

this giant tree.

Side View Mirror...

Each morning as we feed the cattle...

 

this is my view out the side view mirror...

The Cowboy is flaking alfalfa off the back

of the pick up flat bed and

the cattle gather behind and begin eating...

We drive slowly as the Cowboy pushes off 

one flake at a time...

It is a good time to check the mama cows

to see who is getting ready to have a calf...

It is our morning routine...

all of us...

the Cowboy, the Cattle and me.

Tulip Time...

 

It's Tulip Time

here in Western Oregon

A punch of color waiting for us

just outside the front door...

Even the rain drops look beautiful

on the tulip petals...

The rain drops resemble little glass beads...

It has been a very long and wet winter...

but now it is Tulip Time !

We have 5 weeks left in our calving season...

The flowering cherry trees are in full bloom

and the tree swallows have returned and are 

nesting in the big, white bird house...

The days are getting longer with about

three more hours of daylight...

Winter is behind us and

summer is not far away...

I have been spending a little time with

my sewing machine piecing a new tulip project.

Elsa...The Frozen Calf

 Remember Elsa the Frozen Calf ?

This is Elsa a year ago with her mama...

She froze the night she was born and we

thawed her out with a hairdryer...

Fast forward to today....a year later:

This is Elsa now weighing in at 1,000 lbs.

She is the biggest and best heifer in the herd.

I thought you might appreciate an update on Elsa.

Turkey Vultures...

 

They're Baaaack !

Turkey Vultures

It is officially Spring when the

turkey vultures return to Western Oregon

We counted 25 of them today!

They enjoy roosting on the fence posts

at sunrise and taking a solar bath.

Nature Boy Quilt...

 

I challenged myself to gather up fabrics 

only from the cupboard 

and make a quilt...

This quilt is for a friend 

who loves to fish and camp...

These are leftover fabrics from previous quilts

made years and years ago...

It was FUN to get these vintage fabrics out

and stitch them into a new quilt...

Elk, Fish, Moose...

It took one day to put the quilt top together...

It took one more day to machine quilt it...

It took the third day to bind & label it...

Done !

It was FUN to paw around in the fabric cupboard

and use up these wildlife fabrics.
