Improv 9 Patch......Progress

We are 2 weeks into Hay Season...

I mowed the 4th hay field today...

The Cowboy has baled the 1st two fields so far...

In between mowing hay...

I have been spending time listening to

the hum of my sewing machines...

a few minutes here, a few minutes there.

It all adds up !

I have been making more

Improv 9 Patch Blocks...

This is the meager solid fabric stash

I started out with...

I have been hard at work adding to my solids...

Now how FUN is this !

I also found a Kona Solid Fabric color card...

365 yummy colors !

In my non-haying time I stitched:

Green Blocks...

Red & Pink Blocks...

Purple Blocks...

Orange Blocks...

65 Blocks up on the Design Wall

The blocks measure 5 inches

I couldn't handle the gray blocks...

my eye kept sticking there every time I looked

at the design wall....

they are too flat, too dull...

they had to go.

I started moving the blocks around...

I am angling them from top left

down to bottom right by color family.

I am making lots of white blocks

for the border treatment.

I want the quilt to fade out to solid white

on the outside edges.

It's a plan...we will see how it shakes out !

In the mean time,

I will keep making hay and quilt blocks:

I trim all of the blocks to make them wonky...

This adds up to a lot of trimmings...

I plan to use them as skinny slivers

in the rest of my improv projects.

It's That Time of the Year....

The Foxglove are blooming !

The Cowboy has hooked up the mower

to my little red tractor...

It is Hay Making season here in Western Oregon

I am in the first of six hay fields we will

be mowing this year...

It is a really long field

and will take me about 8 hours to get it mowed...

I will have lots of company...

there are a few cow and calf pairs up on the hill

by the red barn.

they are grazing on the hillside just above

the hay field.

You can see the foxgloves growing

along the fence...

The foxgloves grow like weeds here...

At the other end of this long field,

is our place, way off in the distance,

across the river...

I am nearly 6 hours into mowing,

the end of the field is getting skinny!

Bye for Now !

which means I am still stitching:

I am pecking away at this

new improv piece on the design wall

I am half way done with the machine quilting

on the Orange Peel / Pumpkin Seed Quilt:

Dottie Hen was happy to give you a tour

of the yard...

Enjoy our last days of SPRING !

Improv Technique 9...

It's hard to believe I haven't played with

Improv Piecing

for almost a year...

I pulled out my very meager stash of

solid fabrics...

I sliced them into strips of random widths:

Darks on the left.....Lights on the right

I decided to create 9 patch blocks:

No measuring....freehand cutting

I don't want the seams to match up...

Improv 9 Patch

I want the blocks to be a bit wonky...

Yes, this is what I want...

Here it is on the design wall...

I also added in a few improv square blocks

to keep it interesting...

We are heading into a busy summer

of making hay...

this is a good little project that I can

pop into the Thread Shed for a few minutes

here and there and make a square or two.

Looking forward to pecking away at this

over the next few months !

Just had to show off the pink rhodies

in front of the Thread Shed
