Grandmothers Flower Garden.....on the Bed

We are finally sleeping under our
Grandmother's Flower Garden Quilt:

Grandmother's Flower Garden Quilt
100 x 90 inches

Contains more than 12,000 hexagons...
Yes, you read that correctly, 12,000:

Each hexagon is 1/2 inch....the size of my thumb nail

I recently retired this quilt from my trunk show...

It is so HUGE and not fun to load or easy to travel with.

This is the first time we are sleeping under it:

The wool batting is absolutely yummy!

The yellow fabric in the center of each of the 150 flowers
was cut from my own grandmothers yellow house dress:

In honor of my Gramma Helen I have named this quilt:
In the Presence of the Past

Powered Up and......Feeling Groovy

We started out day 5 without power...

The baby chicks were still indoors with us keeping
warm by the wood stove.

I spent the morning gathering up all of the oil lanterns
to refill them with lamp oil...

and checked all of the flashlight batteries
to prepare for our next evening in the dark...

Then we decided to spend the day out of doors
in the sunshine...

After every rain, wind or snow storm
there is lots of clean up in the yard:

Check out the 30 foot fir limb dangling from this tree
in the driveway.

This isn't our first rodeo with tree limbs
hanging from this tree...

Several of our vehicles and those of our friends and family
have unfortunately been crushed by falling limbs from this tree.

Brad ties a strap to the broken limb...

It will take a lot of force
to remove the broken limb from the tree...

With a BIG tug from the pick up...
the 30 foot tree limb falls to the ground.

It is no longer a danger....

Now for the clean up crew to move in...

All of these limbs are from one tree!

Brad fills up the pick up with limbs after every storm.

When we returned from unloading the tree limbs,
we pulled down the driveway at 5pm and...
our front porch light was on!

Let there be POWER

Time to get back into the Thread Shed
and get busy on the Feelin' Groovy Quilt:

This is a birthday quilt for our youngest son.
Do you think I will have it bound and labeled
by April 9, 2012 ?

It is good to have power again!
The first thing I did was turn on the faucet and wash my hands
under hot water.......it felt wonderful.

No Power.....Yet

Your guess is as good as mine...

No Power yet...

Not sure when it will be restored...

This is our 4th night reading by candle light.

The baby chicks are still warming by the wood stove.

We are taking turns running the frig and freezers with the
generator.

I miss my sewing machines...

Snow....NO POWER.....Baby Chicks

Heavy, wet snow fell lastnight...

View out the back door

9pm the power went out...

Daffodils in the snow

The baby chicks had no power for their heat lamp...

They are now warm and toasty in the kitchen
by the wood stove.
Gunnr is thrilled to have them in the house!

6pm....

We are running a few things in the house on the generator,
so I can't stay on the computer for too long.

Hoping the power comes back soon,
it would be so nice to take a shower!

Green Quilt.......on the Design Wall

I took all of Feeling Groovy blocks down off the design wall
yesterday so I could begin piecing that quilt top.

I just hate to see a naked design wall,
so here is my next quilt project:

This is a pattern by Karla Alexander
Be Squared

I rarely work from a pattern...
Most of the time the cover on the pattern is my inspiration
and I rarely open the pattern itself.

I pulled a few greens from the cupboard:

I narrowed them down to these...
A full range of light, medium & darks.

This is a wonderful palette to work with
now that SPRING is finally here
and we are mowing the lawn again!

(I think there is a Quilt Name in there somewhere)

This is a new Quilt for our bed.
Everyone in the family is getting new bed quilts this year!

I am spending the day with 2 of my sisters today,
so the Thread Shed will have to wait until tomorrow.

Feeling Groovy.....Fused & Ready to Piece

Day 4

This is how the quilt looked last night...

I was auditioning center squares for the large blocks.

This morning I fused fabrics, cut 4 inch squares from them
and fused them to some of the quilt blocks.

Not much to show....fusing isn't terribly interesting.
I used Misty Fuse

I numbered the rows,
removed the blocks from the wall,
cut up the gold striped fabric into 2 inch strips...

It's all packed up in a pizza box:

I am ready to begin piecing the quilt top.

I need to get moving on this quilt...
my son's birthday is in 4 weeks.

Since this post was shy on images,
here is a photo I think you will like:
