Working Yearling Cattle...

The sun in finally shining here in Western Oregon

It is perfect weather to round up the yearling cattle

You can see in the photos below, they are being moved from the pasture across the river, over to our barn...

There is a ford in the river just below our house.
It is a good spot to cross the river with the cattle.

The first few calves are just crossing the river...

All the calves have made it across the river.
They are in the pasture just below our house.

Freckles, the horse on the far right, is happy to see the yearling cattle back in her pasture.
They were moved to a different pasture last month, and she missed them.

Brad and his dad are herding the cattle over to the barn...

Freckles, is in the center of the herd.
She considers herself The Cow Mama

The yearlings didn't want to go into the corral...
Freckles got out in front and lead them right in.

The Yearlings in the corral

Yes, that tall calf......isn't a calf...
It is The Cow Mama

Freckles was more than happy to be penned up with the calves.

The Squeeze Chute is set up and ready.
The guys are getting the supplies unloaded.

Freckles is quite happy locked up with the yearling cattle.

The first calf is approaching the chute...

The calves have new yellow fly tags in their ears.
This helps keep the flies off their face in the summer months.

They will also be wormed and vaccinated.

No more photos for awhile......I am giving the vaccinations today.
Brad is putting in the ear tags and worming.
Brad's dad, Delbert, is moving the calves up the alley into the chute.

All of the yearlings have new yellow earrings!

Brad & Delbert herd them through the pasture and down to the river.

Yearling Cattle crossing the Big Elk River

The calves are back on the other side of the river.
Brad is on his way back home.

We were so happy to see sunshine and blue skies today, we didn't even mind working cattle....it was great just to be out of doors!

I did manage to work out in the Thread Shed tonight for a few hours.
I will post a few photos later...

Textile Paint.........Play Day

On Mondays I spend the day with my local quilt group

A few of us decided to play with textile paints and create some surface design on commercial fabrics

The table is set.........we are ready to play

My aunt, Donna Irons, is here from Idaho
She is a traditional quilter and has never dabbled in surface design

Well.......she did today!

Maple Leaves by Donna Irons

Linda played with green and pink paint on these oak leaves

She said, "This is so much fun!"

Oak Leaves by Linda

I played with light paint colors...on a very dark blue fabric
It was an experiment to see if the images would show up well enough on the dark fabric

Dark Blue Batik Fabric
Pearl White Checker Board Background
Gold & Green Birch Leaves

This is a piece I started in March...
I added a few more leaves today.

This is a great commercial background fabric...
Wish I had more of it.

This is the last piece I worked on today...

Kathi's two painted pieces
The rusted fabric takes the paint very well.

The results of our play day...

Flowering Cherry Tree Blizzard

This is what I saw when I pulled down the driveway tonight

Images from Today...

I thought I would catch you up on a few things I have posted about in the past...

Those bed frames that I have been painting...
We put a few, to act as a fence, in the front flower bed.

Pansies

Bed Frame Fence
Flower bed in front of the house...

The deer having been pruning our newly planted burning bushes!
We had to get serious about putting up barriers around them.
These seem to be doing the trick...

This is how Gunnr spends his day...

Chicken Patrol

We are spraying with copper every 7 days to suppress the "Fire" bacteria which is slowly destroying the flowers.
When the weather reaches into the 70's, the bacteria will become dormant, and the flowers have a chance of surviving into the summer months....

This garden ball seems to be inspiring a quilt....
It would be fun to free motion quilt all over this!

Garden Art
Fiddle Head Ferns

The "Fire" Bacteria has spread from the Tulips to the Asian Lilies and now to the Iris bed. You can see on this leaf how it destroys the leaf, and eventually the entire plant.

We continue to spray with the copper and remain optimistic...

An Iris bloomed today...
