Yo Yo.......on the GO!

We are cleaning out the cow barns today

We feed the cattle here during the winter

and the spring calving season...

That amounts to 6 months of manure...

The cowboy is loading up the 

manure spreader.

This will be spread on the hay fields

to fertilize them for next year.

The bald eagle is keeping an eye on us

while he perches above the river

doing some fishing.

I have a lot of down time between jockeying

vehicles and tractors around today...

so I bring along a hand sewing project.

Yo Yos

I just started this project

and the yo yos are piling up...

thanks to this yo yo maker...

This makes short work of creating yo yos...

also easy on your wrists 

if you have carpal tunnel...

I use a double thread so it is strong

when I pull the yo yo tight...

Pulling the yo yo together...

Perfectly stitched yo yo....

There are lots of You Tube videos to show

you how to use the yo yo maker.

I stitched together a ziploc bag of yo yos

but now I need to go move some equipment

and open some gates...

I never leave home without a

take-along-project.

A stitch here....a stitch there...

before you know it,

you have a quilt done!

Oregon Eclipse.....2017

8am...we fed the bottle calves

then headed across the river

and up on the ridge top...

The ridge top gives us 

the best view of our little valley.

You can see our house and barn on the

left side of the photo...

the river runs down the middle...

The cow barns are on the right side...

Mary's Peak is in the center of the photo.

We are preparing our camera equipment

for the solar eclipse at 9am this morning...

9:30am....

10:00...

10:16...

Here is the eclipse for the next 

1 minute and 40 seconds:

We could feel the sun's warmth 

leaving the earth...

At this point...

it was very dark and very cold outside.

The birds started chirping 

and flew into the trees.

When the sun came back into view...

our rooster started crowing, 

just like he does in the morning

when the sun comes up!

Here comes the sun again...

It began to warm up again outdoors

and the birds began to sing...

Within minutes....it was light again!

What a blast!

We had a perfect seat for the event...

Nothing between us and the sun....and the moon!

What a magnificent experience!

Summer Cattle...

It is summer and...

the living is easy ~

The elk enjoy grazing along the hillside

with the cattle...

This is a yearling bull elk

The cattle don't mind

and neither does the elk.

Our yearling heifer, Golden Girl,

seems to take notice of the bull elk...

She wants to get a bit closer,

but he is not interested in being sniffed by her.

When the cattle aren't grazing on the hillside...

they are down below in the swampy area.

This is the last bit of green grass on our place

this late in the summer.

you will see the round hay bales 

stored in the barn.

It won't be long until we are feeding hay.....sigh.

This is a 3 year old replacement heifer

enjoying swamp grass.....yummy.

How beautiful is this little squirrel

perched on the back yard fence...

We have a few more precious weeks of summer,

we savor every minute of it.

Curious Cattle....Video

In the evenings we enjoy spending time

in the pasture with the cattle...

tonight we went across the river 

to visit with the yearling cattle...

They are between 13 and 17 months of age

and very curious....just like children...

This is our beauty, Golden Girl.

She will become a mama cow 

in our herd someday.

They crept closer and closer to us until  we could 

feel their breath and they were licking us.

Now, that's what I call a FUN evening!
