Challenge Quilt 2011....Part 1

I belong to a tiny little quilt guild
The Harlan Valley Quilters
This year our Challenge Quilt Theme is...
SEASONS

Summer
is the season I have chosen for my challenge quilt this year.

Most of my quilts start with an inspiration...

The cover of this scrap book inspires me...
The COLORS grabbed my attention...
The Botanicals called to me...

This is the inspiration for my
2011 Challenge Quilt

How can I get this FEEL in fabric?

This scrapbook cover reminds me of the sun prints
I have been creating over the last 3 summers

Time to get out the paint brushes:

It is September and this is the last of our sunny days
here in Western Oregon,
so I better get to work...

I pulled out the Pebeo Setacolors:

I will try and use these wooden letters in the
sun printing process.

It didn't take long to fill up the back yard with
painted fabrics printing in the sunshine.

I am sticking with the 5 colors that appealed
to me on the scrap book cover

Botanicals and Wooden Letters
printing in the sun...

This is what the print looks like after the botanicals
and letters are removed.

Ferns Printing in the Sun

Sweet Gum Leaves printing in the sun...

Big Oak Leaves & Sweet Gum Leaves

Ferns....Oak, Alder & Maple Leaves

Queen Anne's Lace

17 Sun Prints drying on the clothesline

The scrap book cover was a great inspiration!

Botanicals...
after they have been removed from the painted fabrics.
Many times I press these in a book and re-use them.

Even Clean-Up is Colorful

It was a fun day and a great beginning to my
2011 Challenge Quilt.

Colorado Trip....

Our first two days in Colorado were Heath's days off, so he took us sightseeing and hiking all over the Eagle, CO area.
The rest of the week Brad and I have been exploring on our own, then meeting up with Heath for dinner in the evenings.

More To Come.....

Heath....working in Colorado

For all you Quilters out there...
I will be blogging about our Colorado trip for a few days,
so these will be Non-Quilt related posts.

Heath is working for Parks & Rec for the Forest Service in Colorado this summer. I took this photo last week up at White Owl where he was building picnic tables at an elevation of 11,000 feet.

The skies are so gorgeous here.

Rocky Mountain High....we reached Colorado

We are visiting our son in Colorado. He is an intern here for the Forest Service for the summer. Our Oregon mountains back home look like mere hills compared to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. This image is Heath, Brad & Gunnr in White Owl at an elevation of over 11,000 feet. Click image to Enlarge.

My sketch book is full of images of the mountains, aspen trees, lakes, valleys, wild flowers and so much inspiration for a new landscape quilt I will begin when we return to Oregon.

I did get to Golden Colorado earlier last week to visit the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum...

I am using Brad's laptop, which is nothing like my sweet Mac computer at home, so I am struggling downloading and editing our travel photos. I will post more images as time allows.

Hoping to take my Paul Harvey quilt hiking tomorrow, so I can get a few photos of Paul in this gorgeous Rocky Mountain country.
