Moving Cattle...

The lilacs are blooming...

That means it is time to move the cattle...

Most of the cows have calved.

The winter pasture is exhausted.

It is time to move the cattle up river

to spring pasture...

2 miles of narrow and winding road...

The cow and calf pairs are on the road...

The cows do this every year,

they know the way.

There are three of us on the cattle drive today...

It is a beautiful day to move cows...

First stop is the barn lot.

We will sort off the cows for breeding...

Some of the cows will be bred by Shorthorn bulls.

The others will be bred by Angus bulls.

The sorting is all done.

Time to move them down the road again.

The cattle are happy to be in lush, green fields.

Everything went smoothly today.

Very little traffic on the road.

The cows and calves all cooperated.

The bulls loaded in the trailer easily.

It was a good day!

  1. How cool. We do not have to move our cows that far, just through a gate to the next pasture. It is amazing how they know or remember where to go.. You have some nice cows in your herd.
We have mainly Angus now. Thank you for sharing this

  2. LuAnn, how lush everything looks. The cows look like you could just open the gates and they would walk there on their own. :) Ah yes, focus on the destination. :)
It is good for me to see how much work is involved in your farm. :)

  3. Seems so strange to me to see herding by way of ATV instead of horseback. Yes, I'm old. :)

I first found you on the HQ Sweet 16 Yahoo Group and have been following you since. I look forward to the vultures every year as well as the farm/quilting/crafting/arting stuff. Thank you for sharing!

  4. I probably found your blog through the quilting aspect but just have to tell you how much I enjoy the ranching part! A city girl through and through, I love your photos of ranch life and I'm learning a bit about it through your blogging. Thank you and keep it up!

  5. Any day you can get all the cattle to cooperate with moving locales is a FANTASTIC day!! And to have the weather cooperate as well...mercy, you were blessed! Looking at the pictures of your farm makes me miss home (even though we are brown if it is not irrigated and we have no cows)...so beautiful and peaceful. I find that I need space around me and your farm looks so peaceful that it feeds my soul. Thanks for sharing!!!
