Play Day.....Machine Quilting

I am taking a day to.....PLAY

I have been itchin' to do some

Free Motion stitchin'

I am stitching at the Quilt Palace today

with Ralph the Quilting Kitty

It is good just to play...

This is a one yard hand dye

I am covering with free motion work

I am also playing around with some

long arm rulers

I use the rulers to create a shape,

then I fill it in with free motion work

Lots of FUN!

Great Practice!

Every now and then I do experience

a little cat drag on the fabric...

Today, Ralph spent most of his time

under the quilt sandwich, so that helped.

Remember...

Give yourself time to.....Play!

Happy Holidays

from Ralph and LuAnn

p.s.  I am stitching on my domestic Bernina
with a  #72 ruler foot

  1. You quack me up. Great post and I love your freemotion quilting. Total #CreativeGoodness. But sweet Ralph crawling under your quilt and "cat drag on the fabric" does quack me up.

  4. Looks like you are using your domestic sewing machine for this quilting. What beautiful quilting. It gives me hope that maybe I can learn to quilt on my regular sewing machine with some special rulers.

  5. Hi Theresa,

Yes, I am using a ruler foot on my Bernina and it works just beautifully. Most sewing machine manufacturers have produced ruler feet for their machines. There are also several generic ruler feet available. I have a pinterest board dedicated to Machine Quilting with Rulers: https://www.pinterest.com/luannkessi/machine-quilt-with-rulers/
There are lots of great videos and tutorials to check out. I have learned a lot by watching. The best tip I can give you is to put some sort of grippers on the bottom of your rulers to help them stay in place while you are stitching and pushing the quilt around.

  6. Amazing quilting!! I am always blown away when someone can do quilting like that on a DSM!! I can't even do a straight line without messing it up. I must have my longarm if I am going to quilt at all. I've done place mats twice with SID/straight lines only and a cat mat with loops (just don't look at the back and it doesn't look too awful). I am so terrible I don't even try any more! I hope you have a blessed Christmas with you family and friends!

  8. LuAnn, Do you no longer have your sit down quilting machine? Just curious. Your work is always beautiful no matter what you are working on. When ever I feel the need for crafty inspiration, I visit your blog. Thanks for continuing to share. ~June

  9. Oh yes, I still have my Sweet 16 sit down long arm. I just finished the quilting on the Kitten Quilt on it. I bought the Bernina 72 ruler foot so I can do ruler work when I am at my sit down machine away from home. There really is no difference doing ruler work on the Sweet 16 or the domestic Bernina, they both are equally enjoyable. So glad you are enjoying the blog.....we all inspire one another....now don't we! Happy Holidays from Kessi Farms!
