Quilt Retreat......Day 2

I brought my vintage Yo Yo top to the retreat

for Show 'n Tell:

It was made during the depression
and is approaching 90 years old...

It has inspired me to create my own Yo Yo top...

I carry mine in this canvas dowel bag:

I made this a few years back...

My Yo Yo top is getting larger and is

outgrowing the dowel bag...

This is a much larger dowel bag:

I ice dyed and machine quilted the fabric,

then my aunt created the bag for me...

I have decided to make a larger

canvas dowel bag

to carry my ever-growing Yo Yo top:

Debbie and Linda want to make a bag too...

Here is some messy painted canvas that we

created in 2020

This is a 2 yard piece of canvas

that will be come my new dowel bag...

The bag body and sides are cut out

and ready to stitch together...

The outer shell of the bag is together...

I am stitching together the orange batik lining

and the canvas bag together...

The bag is ready for the dowel handles...

It was a FUN break to get away from the machines

and head into the kitchen to paint our dowels...

While the paint was drying,

we created the bottom support for the bags...

I used the orange batik lining fabric

to cover my heavy cardboard support...

Here it is finished and ready

to transport my Yo Yo top around...

Quilt Retreat...Day 1

I spent this week with the

Harlan Valley Quilters

at the HVQ Spring Quilt Retreat 2022

I took along my new large flowers quilt top...

I decided I want this quilt to fit my bed,

so I added more of the white background

around all 4 borders...

This white background will give me lots

of open space for some FUN quilting designs...

I have the background fabric ironed

and ready to baste...

We have a big work table where we

spray baste our quilts together...

I spray baste with Odif 505 spray...

no odor and it sticks really well

and comes out in the wash...

I use wool batting in all of my bed sized quilts...

The Quilt Palace Kitten

seems to approve of my newest quilt...

Large Florals...

This is what the sewing table looks like

out in the Thread Shed today...

I am cutting and piecing gorgeous florals...

These are part of the Modern Love collection...

I am a sucker for large floral fabrics...

They look like a watercolor painting...

I am trimming 158 bias squares...

The Bloc Loc rulers are the only way to go

when you are trimming bias squares...

After the bias squares are trimmed,

I pieced them into pinwheel blocks...

All of the units are cut out and pieced

and ready for the design wall...

This is the center panel of the quilt...

This is 42 inches tall

Surrounding the center panel with blocks...

How FUN !

Lots of movement with those pinwheel blocks...

All of the units are up on the design wall.

I hope to make it back out to the Thread Shed

soon to begin piecing the top together.

More to Come...

Passing the Torch...

Every Quilt has a story...

She carefully chose the flannel fabrics.

I asked her, "what do you want to do with these?"

She replied, "I want to sew all the pieces together

to make a quilt for my bed."

I cut the flannel fabrics into squares

and she pieced them together...

I told her if she finished the quilt top,

I would quilt and bind it for her...

Over a period of 2 weeks,

she stitched together seam after seam

until she thought it was big enough for her bed...

Then she went home

and I carried on with completing the quilt...

I backed it with with the flannel that

she chose for the back side...

The quilting is done and I am

squaring up the corners...

It is ready for a binding...

The lavender binding is finished...

The flannel quilt is all done...

This important quilt is documented with

a label sewn onto the back.

It is her first quilt.

She has been sewing since she was 4 years of age.

She loves to operate a sewing machine

and hopes to have one of her own someday.

As a quilter of more than 30 years,

I believe I have passed the torch.
