Weaning Calves...2018

It's that time of the year...

time to wean the calves.

After the cows and calves have been sorted...

We haul the calves to this barn.

The calves will stay here for 10 days

until they are weaned.

We have 10 barns....this is my favorite...

It is 90 years old.

The calves are eating a round bale of hay

we made last summer.

The calves are 6 to 8 months old

and weigh 500 to 600 lbs.

These are a few heifer calves

we plan to keep as replacement cows.

Number 22 is Ruby Jean

Number 36 is Shasta,

she looks like a little polar bear!

Remember these little twins?

Number 3 and Number 4

Born in February of this year...

Here are the twins now:

They were separated at birth...

we had another cow who lost her calf,

we put one of the twins on her.

The twins had plenty of milk

and grew really well!

Nature Printing...

We have gathered up leaves...

craft paint...

and friends...

we are nature printing today...

We are printing on paper tags...

Tag on the left is a printed leaf...

tag on the right is a real leaf glued down.

The green background is a large printed leaf...

then over printed with oak leaves.

Leaves with large veins work best...

This is an enjoyable way to spend the day!

Our first stop in the morning,

feeding the cow and calf pairs...

They eat 1200 lbs of hay each day...

We are enjoying a sunny and dry autumn

here in Western Oregon...

These are two of my favorite heifer calves...

Queenie and Ruby Jean

They are a chip off the old block!

They look just like their daddy, Fernando...

Fernando

We feed in 5 different locations each morning.

It is a wonderful way to begin the day,

surrounded by such beautiful livestock.

Soy Wax......Class Prep

The table is set for.....FUN!

I am soy waxing fabric today...

I mainly stamp with.....Found Objects:

Potato Mashers......always a favorite

Hand Cut Sponges.....also a favorite

This fabric was stamped with a hand cut sponge

then painted over with turquoise textile paint...

This is what it looks like after it is

heat set with an iron...

It needs to go in a HOT washing machine next.

This was also stamped with a hand cut sponge

I use diluted textile paints

I used a box fan to dry

the waxed and painted fabrics...

it takes about an hour for them to dry.

This was my favorite piece of the day...

This will definitely end up in one of my quilts

It was a great day of soy waxing...

I am all ready for class on Thursday!
