Portrait Class......Altering Images

We just returned from a road trip to
Yakima, Washington

This is the view when we pulled down the driveway:

The Iris are blooming !

Suzy was glad to be home too !

The Lupine are blooming !

These Iris Blooms will be perfect images
for the Portrait Class later this month...

The evening sunshine enhances the iris petals

I need to alter these Iris images in Photoshop
and print them on fabric for the students...

While we were gone I spent a few days watching this
Killdeer Bird:

She is a beauty...

She is so protective of her nest full of eggs...

Here she is keeping her eggs warm...

Look closely...
She is nesting in the gravel just outside my sister's house.
She blends in so well.

I am always happy to share my photography.
If you are inspired by these images,
feel free to use them in your personal art work.

I had a fun time visiting my sister. We spent a couple of days in her sewing room. I made lots of progress piecing my Double Wedding Ring Quit......I was too busy taking photos of the Killdeer bird that I forgot to take pictures of the quilt.

Portrait Quilt........Completed

This Portrait is going under the needle today...

I pulled out some of my favorite quilting threads:
Bottom Line by Superior Threads
Variations by YLI

The Thread Section of this blog
will explain more about these threads.

I have narrowed the thread choices down to these...

Bottom Line Black for her eyes.
Variations Teddy Brown for her hair.

Bottom Line Tan for her face and hands.

Robinson Anton 24 KT Gold Rayon
for the birds and flowers

YLI Variations Meadow Green for the background.

The portrait in the center of the quilt is sewn on top of the backing fabric.
It is not pieced into the green fabric.
I didn't want seams to distract from the thermofax printing on the green fabric.

To sew the portrait down on top of the green background,
I used a decorative stitch and green thread.

I am pleased with the quilting on the face...

I matched the thread colors as much as possible to the portrait.
From a distance the thread work is subtle.

As you get closer, you can appreciate the quilting stitches.
They create lots of texture and movement in the background.
I will finish this off with a Cord Bound Edge Treatment.

Lilly Portrait #2

This image inspires me...

This image was altered in Photoshop Elements 4
then printed onto cotton sateen fabric

It was then colored and painted with
Neocolor II Watersoluble Crayons
and Inktense Pencils

Today I trimmed down the fabric portrait
and I am ready to audition border fabrics...

I recently created Thermofax Printed Fabrics.
I pulled out a few to see if they would work
with this portrait:

Pink Batik with white thermofax printed dots
I like it a lot...

Dark Blue Batik w/thermofax printed gold lines...
Way too dark

Brilliant Blue Batik w/thermofax printed gold lines
I like it, but the color is too intense

Green Batik w/thermofax printed coneflowers
I like these orange coneflowers,
but there isn't enough fabric for a border treatment

Green Batik w/thermofax printed birds
I also like these orange chickadees,
but there isn't enough for a border treatment either.

I left the piece for awhile just to get away from it...

When I came back I decided the soft green fabric with the orange thermofax prints went nicely with the hair and complexion of the portrait:

I pieced the two thermofax fabrics together
to create a big enough piece for the border treatment.

It is sandwiched together with batting and backing fabric
and ready to go under the needle...
