Sun Dyeing Results...

Never waste a sunny day in Western Oregon !

I pulled out the sun dyeing supplies...

Setacolor Textile Paints and lots of brushes...

Let's see where the day takes us...

Painted Fabrics drying in the sunshine...

This is a rug making grid on top of the wet paint...

This is what the fabric looks like after it has dried in the sunshine

The paints are sensitive to the sun.
The grid acted as a resist.

Fiddlehead Ferns on wet painted fabric...

Straight pins holding the ferns down firmly in place

The BIG Reveal...

The ferns left a very crisp and clear image

Plastic Cling Wrap on top of wet paint in the sunshine

The BIG Reveal...

Glad I tried the plastic....makes a great texture!

A curtain panel on top of the painted fabric...

Makes a great textured grid-like pattern

Queen Anne's Lace & Tansy Leaves

This one makes a rather 3-D image

I have lots more....but this post is getting way too long.

I will save the rest for another day...

Wood Bark......for Printing on Fabric?

We quilters love texture!

Have you ever taken a look at the texture of tree bark?

Tree Bark
Lots of grainy texture on the inside and outside of the bark

I found this incredible bark with swirls of texture!

Check out the cool textures on the inside of the tree bark

The texture is 3D with hills and valleys...

Which begs me to experiment with it for printing on fabric!

There are several ideas running through my mind right now...

Bark Textures

I brought enough home to do a few experiments with paints

But....now I better get back to work...

Wood Splitter
This is where I have been spending most of my time lately

Each morning we come up to the woodpile and split for a few hours

After 14 hours this is our pile:

Just think, If I hadn't been spending so much time splitting wood...

I never would have noticed the cool patterns and textures inside the tree bark!

Inspiration is everywhere.....just keep your eyes open.

I will post images of the Bark/Fabric Printing Experiment soon.

Textile Painting.......Class Samples

I had time to squeeze out one more class sample for Saturday's class

I need something that I can use for my Machine Quilting Demo in class...

Fabric has been painted...
Now I am ready to audition border fabrics

I like the black/gray color in this border fabric...

Unlike the black and very white fabrics I usually use.

For some reason, this piece didn't like the stark whites & blacks.
It required more of the blackish gray shades.

I am listening...

So, I pulled out my stash of B & W:

I sorted out all of the very white & blacks...

Kept the black & gray fabrics...

The border treatment does not distract from the central focal point, and is still interesting.

I will use this piece in class to demo a few machine quilting tricks I have up my sleeves

Just so you know I don't do everything bold and over the top:

Here is my very subtle class sample of leaves

Yes, I can do subtle too!

Look what is growing out behind the Thread Shed

Hollyhocks

They are larger than life...

The STAR shaped center is so interesting

We are headed for a Farm Auction in the morning...
I need to hit the hay ~

Good Night...

Suzy.....The Quilting Doggie

This is my entry for the Pets on Quilts Show

This is a photo I took of Suzy our Jack Russell Terrier

If there is a quilt left lying around, Suzy will find it and get cozy!

As soon as I took this photo...
I just knew it would become a quilted textile someday

Suzy Quilt
Photo Transfer, Free Motion Quilting, Thread Painting

Detail of Thread Work

Suzy's favorite place is under my sewing machine!
She is the very best sewing dog
I cherish our time together in the Thread Shed

When I am binding a quilt...

I am not alone...
Suzy gets cozy on the quilt while I am binding it.

I sit by the window so I have lots of light to hand sew...
Suzy enjoys the warm rays of sunshine while she is napping on the quilt.

I am in the process of making another Suzy Quilt...

Do you think Suzy approves of the pattern?
