Iron Cozy.......Tutorial

Most quilters travel with their supplies.
To lighten the load......I use a travel iron.
It takes up less space and is much lighter in weight than a full size iron

Travel Iron Cozy

Insulated with heat resistant silver lining

I don't need to wait around after class for the iron to cool off.
I can unplug the very hot iron and put it directly into this cozy.
The outside of the cozy will remain cool and I can pack it in with the rest of my supplies.

Supply List:
Fabric for Outside 12 x 15 inches
Insulbrite Batting for middle layer 12 x 15 inches
Silver Heat Resistant Fabric for bottom layer 12 x 15 inches
Zipper 12 inches or larger
Nylon Strapping 12 inches

Layer:
Silver lining on bottom (silver side face down)
Insulbrite Heat Resistant Batting in Middle
Decorator Fabric on the top

Baste all 3 layers together with straight pins

On the 12 inch side...
Place zipper pretty side down, 1/4 inch in from edge.
Using a zipper foot, stitch down the right side of the zipper

Unzip the zipper and place the left side of the zipper face down and stitch it to the left side of the cozy

.

Leaving the zipper unzipped...

Topstitch the back side of the zipper.
(it is thick and you will have to press with your fingers to hold all the layers down while you are top stitching.

Sew a second line of top stitching just to the left of the zipper.

These keeps everything neat and nice and flat.

At this point......you can zip it up and admire your work.
It will be a big tube open on both ends.

Turn the tube inside out... keep the zipper zipped up

Fold in half to find the center.....mark it with a pin (see pink pin)

Fold the bag so the zipper and pink pin line up.

Fold the Nylon Strapping in half and pin the raw edges together.

Place the strap inside the cozy.....raw edges facing outward.
It will be centered where the pink pin was.
Pin in place.

Sew the top end of the cozy.
I double stitch over the zipper area to reinforce it.

Sew the bottom end.

NOTE...you fold the bag with the zipper facing toward you.
This gives the bag the perfect shape to hold the iron.

Psst.....did you remember to unzip the zipper half way before you sewed the bottom?

Trim off any excess zipper

Turn the bag right side out and admire your work...

Make lots of iron cozies for your friends......they will love you for it!

Mixed Media Journal Quilt

Audition 1

Fabric Foundation has stabilizer on the back.
Song Book Paper, Bird image from a book, Packet of Seeds, Subscription card from a Magazine, Fabric with musical notes

Audition 2

I just had to add this second gold finch!
The more yellow I add to this piece, the better it gets.

Audition 3

I moved the little bird down to the bottom and moved the packet of seeds up top.
This allows the bigger finch to remain the focal point.

I used Gel Medium to hold everything down to the foundation fabric.
I am now ready to baste and get this under the needle...

Speaking of Birds.....

Bald Eagle

This big guy was in our back yard today.
This is his favorite tree.
He looks down on the river below and does his fishing from here.

Round & Round She Goes.......Log Cabin Blocks

This is what I worked on today

Close Up View.......Round & Round

The blocks are constructed using the log cabin method.
Start in the center with the red square, then add strips all the way around the square.
Then just keep adding strips going round and round the center square.

These colorful fabrics were a treat to play with all day!

I will post more images of this quilt next Monday...

Color.....Lots and Lots of Color

I Love You to the Stars and Back Again
65 x 65 inches
Original Design by Me

This quilt has been laying around "basted" for over a year!
Today is the day it goes under the needle...

This is so full of color it is Juicy!

Just looking at this quilt energizes me!

I am trying out my new camera.....we are both in a transition mode trying to get used to one another.......I hope the camera has patience with me.

YLI Variations Polyester 35 wt Thread

This quilt is about the color, about the fabric.
The thread work is secondary, just something to hold the layers together.
I don't expect too much of the stitching to stand out.

This is the brightest, juiciest thread I have in my stash!

Superior Threads Bottom Line Thread
Bobbin

The backing is a bit of "Back Art" and very busy.
I think this yellow thread will blend with all the fabrics on the back.

Adjusting Bobbin Tension

This Bottom Line thread is very thin 60 wt polyester.
This requires that I tighten the screw on the bobbin housing.
Righty Tight.....Lefty Loosey

Quilting Thread: YLI Variations
80/12 Needle

YLI Variations is a 35 wt thread.
However, it is no thicker than a 50 wt cotton.
Therefore, I am using an 80/12 Needle.

Warm Up Sandwich

I am testing out the tension between the YLI 35 wt quilting thread and the 60 wt Bottom Line Thread.

While testing the tension, it gives me time to warm up a bit before I start stitching the actual quilt...

First Star Block Quilted

I designed this block so the star points would float.
Even a beginner can piece this block without cutting off the star points!

Borders Quilted

5:30 pm......Calling it a Day

After trying out the new camera, testing threads and needles, I managed to complete about 1/3 of the quilt in 2 hours time.
I am using Patsy Thompson's "Innies & Outies" quilting design.
It is perfect for this very busy and very colorful quilt.

Wish I could get back to this tomorrow......but I am headed into town.
I will post more when I get this JUICY quilt done!
