Quilted Pink Zipper Bags

If they look familiar, it is because I made the pink ones above for holiday gift giving.
You can find my Tutorial if you CLICK HERE

I hope you will give them a try. It is a great way to use up strips of fabric and also great practice for your machine quilting skills!

Image Transfer Homework Completed...

Lily Image Transfer
The top layer is fusible web
The bottom layer is commercial cotton with metallic swirls

With this method of layering, you get 2 prints for the price of one!

Layers separated:
Top image is the printed commercial cotton
Bottom image is the printed fusible web.

The fusible absorbs most of the ink during the printing process.

LuLu's Lily
14 x 18 Journal Quilt

I cut the fusible Lily layer into wavy strips.
I placed every other strip on top of the commercial cotton Lily print.
This created the light and dark strip effect.

I covered it with a teflon pressing sheet and fused it all together.

Detail of Quilted Vine in Border

The free motion quilting for me, is like icing the cake!

I used a green variegated 12 wt thread with a 100/16 topstitch needle.
The heavy thread really shows off on this variegated pink border fabric.

Good to have my homework done and turned into the online instructor in time. I had a Feb 14th deadline. She will now send me the next lesson in this free class offering.

Keeping a Journal...

I have kept a handwritten journal since 1991......wow almost 20 years now. I didn't realize it had been that long. I have always felt that I should expand on the written word and include images along with the words, so the reader has a better understanding of what I am trying to convey. After watching this You Tube Video, I am convinced I need to add images.......I think you will agree.

Start your own journal today,

Photo Transfer.........Homework

Work before Play

Quilter's Freezer Paper
This product makes printing on fabric fast and easy.
After it is ironed, it does NOT curl at the edges!

I signed up for a FREE online class:
Image Transfer Techniques
I need to complete my homework....or I will not be given the next lesson.
So today I spent the day working with freezer paper & cool fabrics I want to experiment with in the printer.

Iron Freezer Paper to the back side of the fabric
Be sure to iron it well at the corners so it will feed properly through the printer.

Trim the fabric to fit the 8.5 x 11 inch freezer paper

Fabric & Freezer Paper ready for the printer
The lesson called for white or light fabrics....
I just had to throw some textured fabrics in the mix!

Photo Transfer of State Fair Zinnia on Fabric
I use an Epson CX6000 with Dura Brite Inks, so I do not need to pretreat my fabric.
This is a photo I took last year in front of our house.
The crackle texture on the fabric is wonderful!

Photo Transfer of Glass on Fabric
My cousin sent me this image of her first attempt at Hand Blow Glass.
As soon as I saw it, I knew it would become textile art.
I love the stars and moons fabric it is printed on.

Photo Transfer of Henry the Rooster on Fabric
Last summer we discovered that Henrietta was really a Henry.
I took this image of Henry eating a blade of grass.
The leaf fabric shows up best on the upper portion of the print.

Photo Transfer of Frozen Leaves on Fabric
I took this photo last fall after a heavy freeze.
This was printed on plain white fabric.

Photo Transfer of Lily on Fabric
This print is two layers: Fabric with fusible web on top.
I was hoping to achieve 2 prints at once.
This jammed in the printer, so I fed it through again, which created the double image.

I peeled the fusible web off - it is the lower image.
The fabric image is the faded one on top with the swirly fabric.

It is time to send these images in to the online teacher, then she will send me Lesson 2.

Rebuilding a Blanky...

He Still Loves it....

Peyton with his Blanky

My niece came over with her son's blanky.......very much in need of some tender loving care. This 30 year old quilt, that belonged to her husband as a baby, was now being loved by their son, Peyton.

The 30 year old fabrics were quite faded, and many of them in shreds with the batting exposed and no binding in sight...........it was very well loved.

Time for: OPERATION REBUILD BLANKY.

My niece found the very same vintage fabric online and within a few days it arrived in her mailbox.......this alone is incredible......don't ya think?

Along with some new flannel backing and a new satin binding.......we rebuilt the blanky.......tucking the old blanky inside for the batting layer.

I waited on pins and needles to hear whether or not Peyton would accept his rebuilt blanky or reject it....

An email arrived with the image of 3 year old Peyton smiling & holding his blanky.......the caption read:
He Still Loves it!

Now this is what quilting is all about!

Moose Lodge........Quilting the Border

One thing left to do.....Quilt the Border

Auditioning Border Threads
I want something blendy, not high contrast.

YLI Variations FAWN
It has a very subtle color change.....just what I want.

Border Quilting

I decided to stick with meandering lines in a North to South direction.

There is a lot of curvy quilting in the center of the quilt.
I thought gentle, sweeping lines of quilting in the border would quiet this down and give your eyes a place to rest when viewing the quilt.

Another relaxing day of simple stitched lines.
Very therapeutic and fun.

Ready for the binding...

Back Side of Moose Lodge......Flannel Fabric

The 60 wt Bottom Line thread was perfect in the bobbin.
It blends in nicely with the background fabric, and there is no thread build up.

This was a pleasure to quilt. I thought of my Uncle Charlie as I relaxed and stitched away on his quilt. I am anxious to visit him next month and surprise him with Moose Lodge.
