Sketch Book.....Background Fillers

A few more quilting designs I drew while traveling:

These work great to fill in background areas,

negative space and around applique work

Innies and Outies are always a favorite and look so organic.

This is what you draw when your coffee has you

a bit over-stimulated!

While traveling back to Oregon we enjoyed

the autumn landscape...

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

The golden autumn grasses are glowing this time of year.

 Pulling down our driveway...

We had some autumn color right in our own yard...

This October Glory tree colored up while we were gone...

It was a great trip, so relaxing and inspiring.

Now to get to work and install a
new floor in the Thread Shed.

Enjoy all this color!

Sketch Book......Background Fillers

A few background fills I drew in the sketch book while traveling:

These can also be used in skinny sashings and borders

These are freeing and FUN to draw out!

I was inspired by the circles and lines above on the left page:

So I drew them out on a larger scale here.

Sketch Book....Designs on a Spine

My favorite quilting motif is a feather,

which is plumes added to a spine...

You can also add leaf shapes to a spine...

You can add curls to a spine...

You can add tiny leaves and curls to a spine...

Draw out a spine.....then add something to it!

Sketch Book......Clam Shell Filler

This Clam Shell Quilt inspired a series of quilting designs:

This is a classic Clam Shell shape...

I decided to draw out the Clam Shell shape in my sketch book:

Each Clam Shell was filled in with a different design

This is a great background filler for free motion work

That lead me to draw out an organic clam shell shape:

This Clam Shell is less structured and looks better in different sizes

Then I put the clam shells in a row:

and echo quilted over the top of them.

I started this design from the bottom of the page and went up

Then I drew wavy horizontal lines...

and stacked the clam shells on the lines

Which lead me to draw more wavy lines...

and echo quilt the clam shells to fill the entire space.

One design lead to the next, to the next, etc.

As ideas come to you, draw them out and see if they will work.

Sketch Book.....on the ROAD

I took 3 Sketch Books along on our trip...

and I filled 2 of them up

I try to give myself a diagram as to how I should approach the  designs when I am stitching them out
onto a quilt surface.

You think you will remember, but sometimes I don't.

It is much quicker to look at my diagram and then I am
off and running with the free motion quilting.

Yellowstone Bison

I drew this pebble design a few months ago.
In the one above I echo quilted around the words twice.
I didn't echo around the numbers.
When I stitch this out, I will echo around the numbers.

 Irrigation Wheel Lines Design:

Here it is October and many farmers are still irrigating their fields.

Irrigation Wheel Line

This was a FUN design to draw out.
It should flow beautifully when I stitch it into a quilt.

We heard from Heath last night in Yellowstone.
Autumn is brief there.
The park is preparing for a long, snowy winter.

Heath climbed the mountain in the center of the photo in August.

Working Vacation.......

We are traveling...

and I am taking my work with me...

I am preparing a class sample...

Are you signed up yet?

This is what I have completed after 2 days and 800 miles on the road:

I am in a bunk house in Yellowstone Park...

Yes, Gunnr came along...

Love the text fabrics...

Stop by JanniLou Creations Quilt Shop in Philomath, Oregon

to view this class sample.

This is why we traveled 800 miles:

Our youngest son called from Yellowstone and was in need of some home cooking

He is holding a Lake Trout

I think Gunnr missed him too!

Yes, we saw this big male Grizzly while there...

and this mama moose and her baby...

Yellowstone Bunk House Crew:

We cooked for these terrific kids who work in the park...

Paul Harvey Quilt came along too:

Paul Harvey in the Tetons

If you have to get some work done....this is a great way to do it!
