Horse Quilt.......#2

Two months ago I made Stormy,
a horse quilt.

It hangs on the wall in our house.

Our family recently drew names for Christmas,
which sent me back to the Thread Shed to create another Stormy Quilt for a gift.

This was definitely a RUSH JOB, but it was still fun!

I put the binding on it today:

Stormy 2

Back Side...
Hanging Triangles in the corners and a dowel

Swimming Noodle

Roll the quilt around the noodle...

This will keep the quilt flat and smooth and easy to transport

This is a gift for my niece for Christmas

Suzy doesn't miss a chance to spend time in the Thread Shed

Magnetic Pincushions...

Today I spent the day making a few party favors...

Magnetic Pincushions

I have to admit....this was a fun project!

This little plate measures about 3 inches across.
It has a magnet glued to the bottom, so the pins stay put.

I found it at the thrift store for less than a dollar.
Wouldn't this be sweet on your sewing table, and it wouldn't take up much room either.

Very Round Kitty Cat
Just throw the pins at the plate, and they stick to it!

Rose

Polk a Dots

Ice Cream Sundae

Circles

Ice Cream Cone

These all came from thrift shopping.
What a great way to recycle...

Here is how I did it:

Glue a magnet on the bottom of each plate

You only need one heavy duty magnet (left plate)
or
3 Regular magnets (right plate)

All Purpose Adhesive works fine.

Time to wrap them up:

Square piece of sparkly tulle and ribbon make the perfect gift wrapping

Magnetic Pincushions ready for gift giving...

I think each one cost under $2 to make, including the wrapping.

Go get busy.....your friends would love one of these!

Challenge Quilt......Part 7

One last peek at the Challenge Quilt in Progress:

The 24 Kt Gold thread highlights the spine of the feather nicely.

The burgundy thread was a bit too dark down the center of the feather, the gold thread brightened it up just enough.

The 24Kt Gold thread is a Rayon...

I was using a size 80 topstitch needle.
I changed to a 90 and no more fraying problems with the thread.

At this point all of the quilting is finished...

It's time to block the quilt and trim it up square.

Aaah....it feels so good to get those rough edges trimmed off.

The binding is sewn down to the top side...

Time to go back in the house and cuddle up on the couch and hand sew the back side of the binding...

Almost Done!

The Challenge Quilts will be REVEALED at our Quilters Holiday Luncheon Monday, December 13th...

Until then, I can't show the entire quilt.

Challenge Project.......Part 6

The deadline is looming for this Challenge Quilt...

I have been working on it, but haven't been able to share much with you...

The members of my challenge group read this blog, so I don't want to spoil the BIG REVEAL.

All of the applique has been fused down and the borders are on...

It is basted together...
This is the backing
Iris at the top and lupine on the bottom portion

I drew a chalk line to help me with placement as I free motion quilt the background.

The flowers are all quilted...

This YLI Green Variations thread should work nicely on the green leaves at the bottom of the quilt...

Lots of overlapping leaves and flower petals shapes are a challenge to quilt around.
The green thread is a good fit on the leaves.

Time to quilt the background areas:

I chose a purple variegated thread...
It is dark enough not to compete with all of the bold applique work,
yet bright enough to be able to see.
p.s. I tried black thread first.....it wasn't visible at all.

This completes the quilting on the interior of the quilt.

Time to quilt the borders...

I chose a burgundy variegated thread for the border feathers.
I made it all the way around the borders.

It is 9pm...
I am hungry and tired and ready to go back into the house for the night.

Tomorrow I will hyper-quilt the border with 24 KT thread...

More to Come~

Thanksgiving Greetings...

Happy Thanksgiving

The Harlan Bird Boy
Heath 1993

Our son at age 8 years
He hand raised turkeys, ducks, geese & chickens.
For Christmas one year he was thrilled to receive an incubator.
It was not uncommon to walk into his room and see baby ducks hatching on his desk.
One time we caught him in the bathtub, with baby ducklings swimming around him.

Today we are thankful for the privilege of raising our two sons.

Wishing you a day filled with gratitude...

p.s. Heath is now 25 years of age, is finishing up his last year of schooling and volunteers part time at a local wild life rescue clinic. His favorite animals at the clinic are the eagles.
