Ice Discharge......Experiment

Several weeks ago I purchased Clorox Bleach Crystals

hoping that they would work better than liquid bleach

in my front load washing machine...

I have not tried them on my laundry yet,

but I have decided to try them out today

on Kona Black Cotton Fabric:

I so enjoy ice dyeing, so thought I would try

ice discharge with Clorox Bleach crystals.

After several hours of watching the ice melt:

I am just not seeing a whole lot of discharge of color?

Not in my second discharge container either.

After the ice was completely melted...

I couldn't stand it...

I sprinkled the ice crystals directly onto the wet fabric.

Then I let it sit overnight:

The ice crystals worked wonderfully well on wet fabric.

I didn't have much luck with the ice discharge method,

but they worked directly sprinkled on the fabric!

I found the crystals to be a mild bleach...

Waiting overnight was the key to my success.

This is an image of the entire 1 yard Kona Black discharge:

I love the red discharge color in this section.

I also discharged 3 black cotton tote bags:

The crystals discharged in places like salt on painted fabric.

Can you see the specks?

I am ready to discharge black hand dyed fabrics,

as well as dark navy, purple, etc.

More to come!

New Project......Orange Peel/Pumpkin Seed Quilt

After completing the Double Wedding Ring

quilt top I am ready for a FUN, happy, quick project...

and I found one.

Orange Peel or Pumpkin Seed Quilt:

You can find this pattern on

Moda Bake Shop

I am using the Circle Magic acrylic template

to cut my circles

The cutting goes very quickly...

I cut through 14 yards of fabric the first day...

234 circles

Day 2......cut batting circles

and layered them with circle fabrics

Day 2......begin stitching the circles

Looks like a stack of pancakes!

By the end of  Day 2 I have half my circle units completed.

This is going to be a FAST project.

I will be working on this every Monday,

so there is more to come!

Double Wedding Ring Quilt Top.......DONE!

16 years ago I took a class...

Piecing the Double Wedding Ring Quilt...

I pieced it on my Featherweight 221...

In Yellowstone Park  in the camp trailer,

I pieced it on my Singer 301...

At an Idaho retreat,

I pieced it on my Singer 185K

Last week while at a retreat here in Oregon...

I pieced it on my Bernina...

The retreat was a week long...

I stuck right with the piecing...

16 years and 3,075 pieces later....it is DONE!

I worked on this quilt in...

Oregon, Idaho, Washington and Wyoming.

My dearest quilting kindred spirit, Linda,

worked along side of me and made her own quilt too!

2016......Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

What direction will you be heading in 2016?

I thought I would begin the New Year by sharing

a quilting design from my sketch book...

I call this.....String of Pearls

The design begins with lines of circles...

You can chalk out the lines on your fabric to serve as

guidelines as you quilt this design.

After you have stitched out the lines and circles:

Begin filling in the background with different textures.

I drew half circles around some of the circles,

then some straight lines.

Continue to stitch out different textures

in each background area...

This becomes challenging and FUN to put a different texture

in each space.

You get the idea......why don't you give it a go!
