Improv 9 Patch......Design Wall Progress

This Improv 9 Patch continues to be my

summer piecing project:

This is what it looked like the last time

you saw it...

Here it is today:

I have been adding more white blocks

around the edges...

I need to piece a few more white blocks

for the bottom edge.

I will eventually add solid white blocks

around all of the edges and the quilt

will fade away to completely white

and the colored blocks will appear to float

in the center.....that's the plan anyway.

All of the hay fields have been mowed,

raked and baled...

We are now gathering up all of the bales

and hauling them to the barns

for winter storage...

We will begin feeding this hay to the

cattle this autumn...

Across the fence from the hay field,

is our yearling cattle.

Behind the yearlings is our place.

This does look like the lazy dayz of summer...

We are back at it....

The Cowboy and I are in the hay fields today...

We are back at it !

I am on the Ford Tractor.....raking hay

Hay Rake

Kind of looks like a carnival ride to me !

The John Deere has all 4 tires today...

The Cowboy is following me baling up the hay !

Those beautiful bales are popping out of the baler

as fast as they can !

Progress !

We are making up for lost time.

The foxgloves grow along the fences

in the hay fields...

The Queen Anne's Lace grow like weeds

along the road side...

Life is Good !

Enjoy the video:

Life in the Hay Field...

Now you see it...

Now you don't...

Tractors don't move very fast on 3 wheels !

How sad is this ???

The Cowboy is using the tractor

to handle the tire...

Tractor tires are full of calcium

to weigh them down,

which keeps the tractor from being top heavy

and tipping over while on un-level ground.

The calcium makes them very heavy and

almost impossible to move.

It took several hours to get this tire back in place...

While the guys work on the tractor

I am heading for home...

and....the Thread Shed

This is waiting for me at home:

Improv 9 Patch

The block count is now at 107 blocks:

I need to fill in on the right side with

blue, yellow and purple blocks.

A few more pink and red blocks at the bottom.

Then lots more white blocks on the edges.

We have a new rooster:

The hens are showing him around the place !

His name is......Lucas

He is a handsome fella...

It was wonderful to hear him crow this morning !

Back to the hay fields tomorrow...

Improv 9 Patch......Improvising

The Improv 9 Patch is evolving...

Design Wall 1

I just placed the blocks on the wall
as I made them...

no real design in mind.

Design Wall 2

Removed the Gray Blocks

Moved the blocks to travel diagonal
from top left to bottom right by color family

Adding white blocks to the outer edges

Design Wall 3

Adding more blocks with white centers
to lighten up the center area of the quilt.

Adding more white blocks to the outside edges.

Staggered the blocks so they are not in even rows.

I like the staggered rows, not so rigid looking.

More white brightens up the center.

The staggered rows create

an uneven edge treatment.

I like that a lot.

I am improving as I go...

I do love to tweek and make changes on the fly !

Design Wall 4

This is as far as I got yesterday....87 Blocks

The quilt continues to tell me what it needs...

all I need to do is listen to it.

We are nearly half way done with hay season.

The cows are out on summer pasture.

We are looking forward to traveling in August.

I hope you are making time

to do what you love this summer...

Improv 9 Patch......Progress

We are 2 weeks into Hay Season...

I mowed the 4th hay field today...

The Cowboy has baled the 1st two fields so far...

In between mowing hay...

I have been spending time listening to

the hum of my sewing machines...

a few minutes here, a few minutes there.

It all adds up !

I have been making more

Improv 9 Patch Blocks...

This is the meager solid fabric stash

I started out with...

I have been hard at work adding to my solids...

Now how FUN is this !

I also found a Kona Solid Fabric color card...

365 yummy colors !

In my non-haying time I stitched:

Green Blocks...

Red & Pink Blocks...

Purple Blocks...

Orange Blocks...

65 Blocks up on the Design Wall

The blocks measure 5 inches

I couldn't handle the gray blocks...

my eye kept sticking there every time I looked

at the design wall....

they are too flat, too dull...

they had to go.

I started moving the blocks around...

I am angling them from top left

down to bottom right by color family.

I am making lots of white blocks

for the border treatment.

I want the quilt to fade out to solid white

on the outside edges.

It's a plan...we will see how it shakes out !

In the mean time,

I will keep making hay and quilt blocks:

I trim all of the blocks to make them wonky...

This adds up to a lot of trimmings...

I plan to use them as skinny slivers

in the rest of my improv projects.
