Feeding Cattle and the Popcorn Tree...

Peek -A- Boo

The Old White Cow

peeked her head out of the barn

as we were driving by

We are checking on the heifers and their calves

this morning @ the lower barn...

This is Golden Girl's sister,

Goldie and her first calf

Althea smells the new bale of hay

the cowboy just put in the barn for the heifers...

The Flowering Cherry Trees

in the front yard are putting on a show:

When the white buds begin to bloom

they remind me of popcorn popping

I call them the....Popcorn Trees

Spring arrived early in Western Oregon

this year !

Orange Peel Quilt Top.....Design Work Completed

I completed the design work on the

Orange Peel Quilt

I tried a scrappy placement of the peels

and it wasn't working...

I tried grouping the peels by color family

and that works...

Purple Peels in the top left area...

Pink Peels below the purple...

Light Blue Peels top right area...

Dark Blue Peels bottom right corner...

Red Peels bottom left...

I put the flying geese

with their color family as well...

For a busy quilt, this arrangement is much

calmer on the eyes...

Yes, this is the design I am going with...

Now, to piece the blocks together

and pick out a border fabric......hmmm.

More To Come !

This morning at the Calving barn...

I captured a few images while we were

feeding cattle this morning...

Heifer Calf......Super Cuteness

Steer Calf

We call him the road runner...

he chases us down in the pick up and races us !

The calves wait around the end of the barn

while their mothers eat hay.

It rained last evening, so the fertilizer

is all soaked in...

we will just sit back and watch the grass grow !

Calving and Fertilizing...

The cows are still calving...

Here is our latest newborn.....Calf Number 54

Check out the red calf in the background,

she has come over to greet the new baby !

She is a real beauty......love that sweet face !

She may become a replacement cow

in our herd some day.

We are still fertilizing hay fields...

The fertilizing spreader is

kicking out the pellets...

I am looking out the

back window of the tractor

while the Cowboy loads up the

fertilizer spreader...

We should be done fertilizing in a few days,

then I can get back to driving my sewing machine !

Orange Peel Quilt.....Progress

This is what the design wall looked like

in February...

All of the applique' blocks are up on the

design wall in a random, scrappy order.

I think I can do better...

I decided to group the blocks by color family:

Purples

Pinks

Reds

Blues

Grouping the blocks by color works for me...

I have more blue orange peels and flying geese

and also some yellows...

My sewing table waits for me...

More to Come !

Rooster rides Sheep...

I was passing by my neighbor's house and

look what I saw...

Yes, her rooster rides around on the sheep !

He follows the sheep as they graze in the pasture

and is known to hop up on them and

take a cozy nap...

April @ the Kessi Ranch.....

Kessi Ranch.....April 2021

We are half way through calving season

with 50 calves on the ground so far...

We call this baby steer.....The Road Runner

He likes to race us

when we drive through the pasture !

The Turkey Vultures have migrated back

to Western Oregon

They greet us each morning on our way to

the calving barns...

They enjoy a solar bath when the sun rises

each morning...

Their feathers looks so beautiful

back lit by the morning sun.

Yes, it is that time of the year...

Fertilizing the Hay Fields...

The Fertilizer Spreader is loaded up...

No Time for Sewing

until the fertilizing is all done !
