Sunrise in the back yard this morning...

Yesterday I dug through the fabric cupboard
and pulled out lots of yummy
jewel tone batiks:
I am beginning a new hexagon quilt...
I have a weak spot for
jewel tones and batiks...
I spent the evening
cutting out hexagons and basting them...
my train case is ready for travel quilting...

We are heading for town today...
We need to stop by the feed store and pick up
protein tubs for the cattle and groceries for us...
I will be stitching
all the way to town and back again!

Do you have a quick way to cut out all the hex shapes? I've been thinking of starting a hexxie quilt in the not too distant future. I've got all the paper shapes for the paper piecing but wasn't sure how to quickly cut the shapes and minimize fabric loss. Thanks for any advise you can share on this.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful batiks! I have three charm packs of jewel tone batiks and some solid black jelly rolls I am going to make a quilt with. I can't wait to get it started. Which will be after I get the courage up to clean and organize my sewing room!

ReplyDeleteI layer my fabrics 4 deep so I can cut 4 hexies at a time. I cut a row of hexagons, then stagger the next row so I have minimal fabric loss. After a layer my fabrics 4 deep, I run a glue stick across the back of one of the hexies and stick it down to the top of the fabric pile, then I cut around it with a pair of scissors (through all 4 layers), then I separate the 4 hexies and glue the other 3 papers onto the fabrics, which gives me 4 hexies, then I glue the seam allowance down to the papers…….4 basted hexagons. You get into a zone and you get them done quickly. I have been making hexagon quilts since 1993 so it is second nature to me and I have streamlined my methods to be efficient.

NO, I don't pre-wash my fabrics, I prefer the stiffer feel of the new fabric, much easier to cut and handle during the process. After the binding is on the quilt, then I give it a good washing. Everything shrinks up just right that way.
