Hexagon Quilt……Binding

Time to get the binding on this Hexagon Quilt...

I keep the binding in this coffee container...

The binding is stitched onto the top side of the quilt…

The coffee container sits on the floor

between my feet as I stitch…

The binding feeds flawlessly

onto the quilt surface as I stitch…

I am happy with the text fabric as a binding treatment…

I had this FUN fabric with circles

for the back side of the quilt…

This one is…..DONE!

Autumn has found us here in Western Oregon

Red Maple trees in the front yard…

The hydrangeas by the front door are still putting on a show!

  2. I love the way this quilt turned out. I've just begun my hexagon journey. Did you trim the edges to create straight edges? If so, did you do this before quilting it?

  3. Hi Mary,
You caught the straight edge treatment. Good for you! No, I don't cut the edges straight. I piece in half hexagons to create a straight edge. I blogged about this process here:

  6. I knew there was a reason to save all those coffee cans! Did you hand sew on the back? Beautiful quilt. I always look forward to your blog posts. Thanks.

  7. Hi Diane,
Since you are a No-Reply blogger, which means your email does not show up when you comment to me, I will reply to your question here:
I blogged about machine stitched bindings here:

  8. Good idea with the coffee can, I use one for trash, threads, bunny ears etc. something that works for me with the binding too, I took two of the superior cones that were empty, joined then together in the middle, ran a piece of beaded material thru them. I wrap the binding around them, place it round my neck and it unwinds as I go. I am going to try your idea though, love it.

  9. The back fabric is as nice as the front!

  10. So, I apologize if my question has already been asked. I was wondering what fabric line did you use on the front of your quilt or is a mashup of different designers? I really like it and it reminds me of some Tim Holtz fabric I saw once upon a time. I love the rock-vintage/steampunk look especially for one of my daughters who is a complete tomboy and has an aversion to anything pink or 'girly'and I would love to work on something like this for her.Love that text binding, also. I used to HATE binding quilts until I actually learned how to do it correctly and now it is one of my most favorite parts of quilting.
