Feeling Groovy......Under the Needle

Day 8

The green border fabric has been added:

I chose this pale green fabric to lighten up the
overall look of the quilt.

The quilt is spray basted and ready to be machine quilted!

Thread Audition:

The yellow on the left is too bright.
The fawn in the middle is too pale.
The Teddy Bear Brown on the right is just right.

Feeling Groovy is under the needle of the
Handi Quilter Sweet Sixteen
This is a sit-down long arm machine.

This is the quilting motif I will use:

It has a funky feel just like the rest of the quilt.

I am pleased with the thread color choice:

This quilt is ALL about these groovy Marcia Derse Fabrics.

I don't want the thread competing with the fabrics...

The machine quilting adds a great deal of texture
without taking anything away from the surface design
on the fabric:

5 hours of machine quilting today...
2 rows of blocks quilted so far.

I will be back at it again tomorrow morning.

  1. I only have 2 YLI threads but one of them is Teddy Bear and it's one of my favorite threads. It seems to blend with just about everything! That quilt is going to look great!

  3. How do you like your Sweet 16? I'm assuming you FMQ with a traditional domestic machine before you got this machine? I have played with the machine at shows... Just curious.

  4. Hi Pat,

Last fall I went to the Machine Quilting Expo in Portland and ran into David Taylor, yes, THE David Taylor.
He spent some time with me and the Sweet 16, which is all he uses for his machine quilting.
He convinced me I could not live without the Sweet 16.......and he was so right!
I tried ALL of the sit down long arms on the market and none of them came close to the Sweet 16.
Best of all, the Sweet 16 had the very best price of them all. When purchased at a show, you get a BIG discount.
It is not a stripped down version of a long arm, like most of them are, it truly is a fully functioning machine that just happens to sit into a table and has the BIG Class M Bobbin.
I purchased the extension tables, so I now have a 6 foot wide quilting surface.
I also purchased the optional open-toe hopping foot, which gives me great visibility.
Handi Quilter offers terrific tutorial videos on youtube, even one to help me install the open-toe foot.
I purchased a TOWA bobbin gauge, so it is incredibly easy to set the bobbin tension.

I have been quilting on my little Bernina QE for almost 10 years now.
So, moving to the Sweet 16 was an easy transition for me.

    Good Luck,

    LuAnn Kessi
