Update......Bottle Calves

Many of you ask about the calves

so here is an update:

We continue to feed the bottle calves

twice a day...

Half Gallon of Milk.....morning and night

Number 25 is now 5 1/2 months old.
He is a twin calf that became an orphan.

Behind him is a dairy calf that is his companion.
He is 3 1/2 months old.

After their bottle, they eat grain...

After their grain, they eat hay...

They also have irrigated pasture
just outside the barn.

We start and end our days with these

sweet, little guys...

they are doing really well.

They will be weaned in November

when the rest of the calf herd is weaned

from the mother cows.

  1. Do you milk the momma cow to give them her milk or do you use a milk replacer?
Those "little" guys are so cute!

  2. Hi Claudia,

I mix up milk replacer powder twice a day for them. They drink it right down!

  3. So glad you posted! I honestly have thought of them but was afraid to ask! HA They are so sweet...don't you get attached??? I do just by looking at them on your blog! HA

  4. Hi Robbie,

I do love them but I work very hard at not getting attached to the bottle calves. I tell myself it is in their best interest to remain somewhat wild. They will eventually join our other calves when they are all weaned off their mothers in November. The bottle calves will still remain here @ our home place since we keep all of the weaned calves here to feed them over the winter months.

Luckily, it is rare to have to put a calf on a bottle….I hope I don’t have to do it again for a long, long time.

  5. I know it is so much more work for you to bottle feed the calves, but I have certainly enjoyed watching these two grow up! Thanks for the update...I've been wondering about them!

  6. I only have a few more weeks of bottle feeding the calves…..I have enjoyed it…..I will miss their presence in the barn. They will be fed hay over the winter here @ home on our place with 50 more weaned calves from our main cow herd so I will see them most ever day. I know they will be happy running with their own kind, but I will miss them.
