Whole Cloth....Progress

Earlier this month I completed the

design work on paper

for my next whole cloth quilt...

Layer 1.....Basic Design Lines

Layer 2.....Larger Motifs

Layer 3....Fill Work

36 inch square quilt size

You are looking through all 3 layers

of the design on paper.

The border feathers on this design are

very large.

I decided to baste up a practice sandwich

so I could practice stitching out

very large feathers...

After the feather work,

I decided to finish off the sandwich with some

background fills...

I used this grid stencil to chalk out

the lines for the right side of the sandwich...

Then I stitched a double wedding ring design

within the straight line grid work.

I chalked out a clam shell stencil

for the left side of the sandwich...

I stitched 2 little eyelashes on the inside

of each clam shell shape.

It was good feather stitching practice

as well as background fill work FUN!

I may turn this into a tote bag or

tablerunner?

Yesterday I transferred the design lines

from the paper onto the satin fabric

using a light box and blue water erase pen:

I only need the main design lines

traced onto fabric.

The remainder of the design is

free motion stitching.

This is now basted into a

36 inch square quilting sandwich

and is ready to go under the needle.

I will take photos and share my progress

as I machine quilt this whole cloth quilt.

More To Come!

  2. It's so pretty out there right now! We had some good heat for a few days and today the wind started in. 25 MPH sustained. (I could live without the wind)

Your whole cloth quilting is gorgeous! You are such an artist!

  3. I don't know how you get any quilting done in a day! Watching the 'kids' is a hoot!!! Your piece is wonderful!!!!! And the practice piece is something else! WOW!!!!

Someday, you'll have to tell us more about you and how you met the cowboy! If you were raised on a farm yourself...or just write a book! I'll buy it!!

  4. Hi Bobbie,

Many thanks for all your wonderful comments! I was born and raised in New Jersey....just 20 minutes from NY City. As a child I longed to live on a farm. When I was 24 I hitched up with the Cowboy and here I am today!

    My Best To You,

  5. I love your design and look forward to seeing some more posts about it. I have been offline for a few days because we are living in our RV near Bend Oregon. I saw your post about the Sisters Quilt show and was wondering if you are planning on going. I will be there and it would be really fun to meet you in person. I have been following your blog for some time.

  6. Howdy Sewing Up a Storm,

I just love the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show…..I think I have attended nearly 20 times. If you go to the Quilt Show office at 6am, the day of the show, you can volunteer to hang the quilts….it is great FUN! One year I hung Kaffee Fassette’s quilts. While I was hanging them, he walked up behind me (I was up on a ladder) and said, “you are doing a great job!” I turned around and said, “hey, I know you!” I climbed down off the ladder and grabbed my camera and now have a photo of Kaffee and I with his quilts. Great quilt show memories.

It all depends on hay season if I am able to attend the Sister’s show. I am the Cowboy’s one and only hired hand. Our boys are grown and gone now so he needs my help to get the farm work done. If the stars align and the timing is right and I am not needed to be in the hay fields, I will head over the pass to see the quilts. If I do, I will say so on my blog, we can meet up at the show and visit for a bit.

Many thanks for your always wonderful comments,

    LuAnn Kessi

  7. You do such beautiful work. Did you take a class in whole cloth quilt design? I thought you mentioned that you did but I can't find it in your earlier posts.
