Gunnr's Portrait Quilt

Quilted and ready for an edge treatment.
I am considering just a facing...
Gunnr doesn't appear to be overly impressed with his portrait, but I am just tickled with it.
I am also anxious to get busy with the Neocolors II crayons again soon!

As soon as Brad was done taking his picture, Gunnr jumped 5 feet straight up in the air.

I have to say the Neocolors II makes this process fun and easy.
Following along closely with the original photo, as you color with the crayons, is quite necessary, it helps so much in determining the light and dark areas.
I hope you will give it a try.

Also, use a light touch when coloring with the Neocolors II......a little goes a long way.
ReplyDeleteToo heavy of an application of crayon can create a heavy wax across the surface of the fabric when it is wet.
Also a very light touch with the mixture of Textile Medium and water. Dip the brush in, but tap off most of the liquid, then apply it to the fabric.
Dab the fan brush on the crayon, do not drag it across, or it will blend and smear the colors, unless that is the look you want.

Wow, what a great portrait of Gunnr. I have 2 dogs and 1 cat and I've been wanting to put them in a quilt somehow. Did you use any books or instructions to help create it or did you just play until you got what you wanted. My one dog is a Samoyed, which is all white, you cant tell in my pictures but she has a full "mane" that I want to capture in the portrait. Any suggestions? I will definately use your portrait for inspiration. You should go into business doing animal portraits. :)

ReplyDeleteYes, I do heat set the Neocolor Portraits after they have dried. I think it gives a softer hand to the fabric, although the Neocolors do not make the fabric stiff at all.
You will enjoy playing with Neocolor II Crayons!
