English Paper Piecing and Plowing...

On Mondays I spend the day with the

Harlan Valley Quilters

@ the Quilt Palace

I brought along the Horse Panel
and put it up on the design wall...

This is my little corner of the sewing room...

I also brought along the border/frame
for the Horse Panel...

The hexagon papers need to stay in the
outer edge of the borders.....for now.

The borders are pinned up around the panel.
I need to do some measuring and tweeking
before I can begin the applique' work...

It is good to see it up on the wall.

Then I had to shove off for the hay field...

I spent the afternoon and early evening

working ground in the hay field.

We are hoping to have this planted

by the end of the week.

Hand Piecing and Covering Hay Bales...

I am making progress on the

Horse Quilt Panel

English Paper Pieced.....Borders

I finished the 4th border last week...

Last evening I pieced the 4 borders together
which creates a frame around the horse panel...

I put a chair in the photo so you can see
the actual size of the piece.

My next opportunity, I will applique' this frame
to the horse quilt panel.

Most of the hay bales we made last summer
have been stored in all the barns...

The rest of them are stored outdoors...

It is time to get them covered:

We use large sheets of plastic 100 x 28 feet...

This plastic is heavy.

It is unrolled on top of the stacked hay bales...

Then the plastic is pulled down over the sides of the stack...

Now it is ready to be tied down...

The tying crew gets to work...

The different color paint circles on the ends
of the bales lets us know which field
the hay is made from.

In just a couple of hours,
all of the stacks are covered...

We will feed these bales first.

After they are all gone,

we will feed the bales that are in barn storage.

We feed over 400 bales a year,

which is nearly 200 tons of hay.

Vinyl Pouches and Plowing...

I have several rolls of clear vinyl...

it is time to set it FREE

I am turning it into Vinyl Zip Cases...

The Vinyl is cut into squares...

The Zippers have tabs sewn to the ends...

I am all ready for mass production !

We are in the Bull Field this week:

I am driving the Cowboy's John Deere 4440

Plowing up the Hay Field:

This tractor is a dream to operate...

It will take a couple of days
to get the plowing done...

I have the A/C blowing and the tunes turned up...

I will be back in front of the sewing machine

in no time !

Hand Piecing, Pears and Wild Fires...

The English Paper Piecing continues

on this Horse Quilt Panel...

Three of the four border sections are
hand pieced together...

This is the fourth and final border
I am piecing now...

I have been toting the borders around
in this Messy Painted Canvas tote bag...

When a hand piecing moment arises,
I pull a border section out of the tote bag and stitch for awhile.

Our pear tree in the yard
has been fruitful...

Pears....almost too pretty to eat !

Pear Freezer Jam

We pick a few pears each day,
some are shared with our little goat herd,
the rest will become canned pears.

This is the view just outside the front door:

A few of the cow and calf pairs have come up
to the yard fence...

The Oregon Wild Fire smoke blew into our
little valley a week ago...
you can see it hanging back in the timber.

Directly under the tree, is one of our
3 year old bottle calves...
he is so tall, he towers above the yard fence.

Wild Fire smoke hangs in the timber at the edge
of one of the hay fields...

We are safe from the fires here at home,
but nearly one million acres has burned
in Oregon so far this season.

The Dinner Plate Dahlias
are putting on a show in the back yard:

They are at their peak at the very end
of the summer...

It is their way of saying Good Bye...

We are busy preparing for

the winter months ahead.

The rain will be back soon and we must be ready.

More To Come !

Hand Piecing and Peaches...

Our power has been out for several days so...

I have been english paper piecing

the borders on this horse panel quilt...

There are 4 borders...

I have this bottom border left to hand piece,
then I can put this baby together
and get on with the machine quilting.

The power came back on today...

I got busy canning these peaches...

We are enjoying the last of the summer flowers...

Thread Shed petunias, hollyhocks and dahlias

The deer have begun to come in the yard at night

and munch away on the petunias and hollyhocks.

Now that the power has been restored,

I am hoping to do some machine quilting soon.

Enjoy these last few days of summer!
